Australians unite against whaling in Southern Ocean

Anti-whaling protesters have joined forces across Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.S.A calling for an end to the killing of whales for meat by Japan. Greenpeace organised the international day of action as it continued its efforts to disrupt the hunting of minke whales by the Japanese whaling fleet currently in the Southern Ocean.

The day of action was being marked to protest the actions of the fleet which protesters believe violate the 1986 International Whaling Commission (IWC) global ban on commercial whaling. Japan’s JARPA Japanese Whale Research Program was allowed to operate under a Special Permit in the Antarctic according to Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. In its JARPA-2 plan, Japan plans to double its annual scientific research catch of Minke whales to 935, and to add 10 Fin whales to its quota. The International Fund for Animal Welfare states that over the next two years, Japan plans to kill 50 endangered Humpback whales and an additional 40 fin whales.

Nokia Inc. announces plans for iPhone rival

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Announced early Wednesday morning at Nokia’s GoEvent, in a plan to expand the company’s revenue, Finland-based company Nokia Inc. is developing a mobile phone similar to its rival iPhone, which will be available in the near future for Nokia customers. The phone is expected to be available by 2008.

Most of the features are the same as the iPhone’s. They include music, games, and many other features, even ones that the iPhone may not have. Ovi (in Finnish meaning “Door”) will be the door for more than 2 million songs and games available for download on the new device. Users will be able to download wirelessly in their own home or anywhere there is access to a computer.

But this is not the first time Nokia has made an attempt like this to increase its revenue. In October of 2003 the company revealed the N-Gage, a game-playing cell phone, but was “stocked-out” due to poor sales. The N95 smartphone, which was released in the U.S. on April 7, 2007 (before the iPhone on June 29, 2007) includes WiFi, a GPS, a music player, and a 5 megapixel digital camera. The three other phones that were revealed at the event in London will be in-stock next quarter. The new N81 and the modified N95 smartphones were among the revealed at yesterday’s event; the N81 is a new member to Nokia’s smartphone family; the N95 has been modified by having more memory and a sleeker LCD screen.

When Nokia was asked about the striking similarity between this and the iPhone, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, Anssi Vanjoki, said, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.”

Nokia first demoed their iPhone rival August 29th. During their demo they omitted the fact that the demo was for the software to be in use, not the actual hardware.[1]

Football’s Rooney returns to Everton

Sunday, July 9, 2017

Manchester United’s top scorer Wayne Rooney signed a two-year contract with his boyhood club Everton, the Merseyside based football club announced today.

Rooney joined Everton when he was nine years old, and made his professional debut in 2002 when he was sixteen years old. He scored seventeen goals with Everton in 77 appearances before he moved to the Old Trafford in 2004. The record goal scorer with United and with the English football team netted 253 goals in 559 games in the United jersey. He has won five Premier League titles, three EFL (English Football League) Cups, a UEFA Champions League, an FIFA Club World Cup, and an FA Cup. He also collected the winners’ medal after Manchester United won the Europa League in May. Rooney was used as a late substitute in the Europa League final against the Dutch capital football club Ajax.

Rooney wore Manchester’s jersey for thirteen seasons, and was club’s top scorer of the season on five occasions. After the arrival of José Mourinho, last season, and United’s manager, Rooney made just 25 appearances, starting only fifteen of them; scoring eight goals in total. This was his least number of appearances and goals scored in a single season.

After penning a two-year term, Rooney said, “I’m not just coming back because it’s the team I support, the team I grew up playing for — I’m coming back because I feel the club can move forward and be successful”. Earlier, Manchester United announced reaching an agreement for Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku with Everton.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman said, “Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality — he knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home […] He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back. He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.”

Reviewing Possible Injuries With A Birth Injuries Attorney

byadmin

In Louisiana, birth-related injuries could lead to serious conditions for infants as well as their mothers. The failure to provide adequate health care could be the chief factor that produces these injuries. The following are details about common injuries to discuss with a birth injuries attorney.

Brain Injuries During Birth

The deprivation of oxygen during birth can lead to serious injuries. These injuries include hypoxia, perinatal asphyxia, and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. The most common brain injury due to oxygen deprivation is cerebral palsy.

FBI begins widespread financial probe of 26 firms

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The FBI is investigating 26 firms and 1,400 individuals involved in the US financial crisis for fraud and “sub-prime lending practices”. Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, Fannie Mae and AIG are among the firms being scrutinized after recently receiving federal bailouts.

Investigators, who are cooperating with the IRS, Postal Office, and other federal offices to complete their investigation, are concerned that major corporations may have also forced or bribed ratings agencies to favor them.

The probe, which is in early stages, began eight months ago when the FBI began taking a close look at the mortgage industry and widespread irresponsible loaning practices. At least one corporation has been raided, but so far no evidence of fraud has been found.

The FBI has questioned executives of each of the firms closely, and arrested two in June. An anonymous source told The Times that the firms had been ordered to “hold all papers and e-mails under lock and key” as the FBI scours the finances of each firm.

Many of the companies and individuals being investigated are at the center of the nationwide financial crisis and controversial bailout plans, and have been widely blamed for the country’s financial crisis. The investigation has come at a time when the eyes of many in the US and around the world are turned towards the financial markets, as Congress and politicians scramble to fix the crisis while the election date looms closer.

Officials told CNN that it would be a long time before the investigations were finished, adding a warning: “Don’t expect indictments tomorrow or next week or next month”.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Narrowing Down Available Auto Loan Schemes

By Craig Clowes

Ontario is one of the most well known provinces of Canada. The country’s capital, Toronto, is also part of this province. Auto loans are one of the many ways which people in the province use for car financing. Thus auto loan schemes are very commonly available throughout all cities of the province. Cars are now regarded as a necessity for people. Especially in the busy cities of Ontario, automobiles are used on a regular basis by all kinds of people. For this many people adapt an auto loan Ontario to finance their vehicle needs. Due to this, there are many financial institutions which provide auto loans to the people residing in the cities of Ontario. With each financial institution, there come many loan schemes which are being offered. There are ranges of factors which one needs to consider, for narrowing down their search for an auto loan Ontario scheme.

The very first thing a person needs to look upon is the type of car they are looking for. The type of the car would refer to the specific size of the car, the amount of people it can adjust, and the functionality of its mechanical parts. This also refers to deciding upon the exact use of the car. For instance, if the automobile is needed for household use or office use. There are different types of cars designed for different types of uses, thus there are different types of auto loans offered by various financial institutions. This is the basic point to determine which category of auto loan schemes one needs to look at.

The next factor which one needs to consider is to calculate the rough figure which would represent the amount of loan payments possible every month. This is highly coherent with the amount of income or salary one holds every month. Every loan scheme normally indicates how much money has to be paid back to the financial institution every month. This gives a brief idea to the potential client of the specific auto loan scheme, to calculate their monthly budget or scheme after they have an access to granted loaned money.

Another factor to narrow down the race for auto loan schemes is to calculate the amount of time for which a person requires the auto loan. Different loan schemes have different time periods, in which all loan payback payments have to be made, and this is normally made legal through an official contract. Many loan schemes which would offer the same amount of money for car financing might differ in payback time periods, depending on the policy of their respectable financial institution.

Additionally, another way of comparing different auto loan schemes is to compare the reputation of the financial institution, which they are being offered through. Reviews regarding the liability and dealing ethics of each financial institution regarding their auto loan schemes can be easily found on the internet and also through previous successful clients who promote their views on official auto loan online websites.

All these factors mentioned can help one to compare and narrow down their auto loan searches, therefore they should be carefully considered.

Parents prosecuted after homeopathic treatment leads to daughter’s death

Friday, May 8, 2009

Thomas Sam, 42, and his wife Manju Sam, 36, from Sydney, Australia, are undergoing trial for manslaughter by gross negligence for the death of their nine-month-old child, Gloria. She died from infection caused by severe eczema after they shunned effective conventional medical treatments for homeopathy, a form of alternative medicine that has been described as pseudoscience. Articles in peer-reviewed academic journals including Social Science & Medicine have characterized homeopathy as a form of quackery.

Gloria developed severe eczema at the age of four months and the parents were advised to send the child to a skin specialist. Thomas Sam, a practising homeopath, instead decided to treat his daughter himself. His daughter’s condition deteriorated, to the point that the baby spent all her energy battling the infections caused by the constant breaking of the skin, leading to severe malnutrition and, eventually, her death. By the end, Gloria’s eczema was so severe that her skin broke every time her parents changed her clothes or nappy, and in the words of the Crown prosecutor, Mark Tedeschi, QC, “Gloria spent a lot of the last five months of her life crying, irritable, scratching and the only thing that gave her solace was to suck on her mother’s breast.” Gloria also became unable to move her legs.

Mr. Tedeschi also told the court that, over the last five months of her life, “Gloria’s eczema played a devastating role in her overall health and it is asserted by the Crown that both her parents knew this and discussed it with each other.” However, despite their child’s severe illness, and her lack of improvement, the Sams continued to shun conventional medical treatment, instead seeking help from other homeopaths and naturopaths. Gloria temporarily improved during the rare times they used conventional treatments, but they soon dropped them in favour of homeopathy, and she consistently worsened.

Allegedly, Thomas’ sister pleaded with him to send Gloria to a conventional medical doctor, but he replied “I am not able to do that”. The parents are also accused of putting their social life ahead of their child, taking her on a trip to India and leaving her to servants while embarking on a busy social schedule, and giving her homeopathic drops instead of using the prescription creams they had been given.

Gloria was finally taken to the emergency department shortly before her death. By this time, “her skin was weeping, her body malnourished and her corneas melting”, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Speaking in the parents’ defense, Tom Molomby, SC, said that, as the parents came from India, where homeopathy is in common use, they should be declared not guilty due to cultural differences.

Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine which treats patients with massively diluted forms of substances that, if given to a healthy person undiluted, would cause symptoms similar to the disease. Typical treatments take the dilutions, with ritualised shaking between each step of the dilution, past the level where any molecules of the original substance are likely to remain; for homeopathic treatments to work, basic well-understood concepts in chemistry and physics would have to be wrong. There is no evidence that homeopathy is more effective than placebo for any condition.
