Symbolism of the Buddha’s Dispelling Fear Pose

by

Rob MabryThe Abhaya Mudra is referred to as the “dispelling fear pose.” It is the Sanskrit word ‘fearlessness’ and this mudra or pose is commonly seen in Buddha statues. It is seen as a symbol of protection and security and is thought to ward off fear and danger. This pose can be recognized by the position of the right arm. The palm faces outward, hand raised at shoulder height with the arm slightly bent. This Buddhist symbol of courage emphasizes the spiritual power of the bodhisattva or Buddha who makes it. A bodhisattva is being who has achieved an enlightened state and embraced the Buddhahood. The gesture can also be considered symbolic of friendship as the empty hand is devoid of weapons. The position is often misinterpreted by Westerners as an indication to “stop, but” it really courage in the face of danger. Buddhist historians believe that the dispelling fear pose was the gesture made by the Buddha Shakyamuni just after he achieved enlightenment. Tales from the Buddhist religion pipe frequently refer to the Buddha’s use of the dispelling fear pose to pacify the enemies who threatened him. Only a Buddha statue or bodhisattva sculpture would be seen in the dispelling fear pose, as it is only useful to those who have achieved enlightenment. In Thailand and Laos, the pose of dispelling fear is most often seen in Buddha statues where the Buddha stands. This mudra is most identified with the fifth Dyhani Buddha, Amoghasiddhi. The five Dyhani Buddhas are the five great Buddhas or five wisdom Buddhas who represent the core qualities of the Buddhist philosophy. In Buddhist art and teachings the five great Buddhas are positioned at North, South, East, West with one in the center. Those wishing to remove negative feelings like jealousy and emphasize one’s own accomplishments. Jealousy is a negative emotion that can be interpreted as a form of fear, so the dispelling fear pose makes sense. When we see the Buddha in the dispelling fear pose, usually the right-hand is in the Abhaya Mudra with the left hand resting at the Buddha’s side. Sometimes the left-hand makes the varada mudra, a gift-giving gesture. Another symbolic meaning of the dispelling fear pose is an interpretation of the action of preaching. Chinese and Gandhara Buddha interpretations are the ones that most often used to dispelling fear pose to represent the Buddha preaching. Display of a Buddha statue in the dispelling fear pose can have many purposes within the home beyond Asian decor. a Buddha statue in the dispelling fear pose as citations of protection, safety and courage. It also reminds us of the value of of inner strength and the need to emphasize our desire to abolish our own fear and doubt.

Wikimania 2008: MediaWiki use in the U.S. Department of State

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Sunday, July 20, 2008

The last day of the Wikimania 2008 conference saw Saturday morning sessions on a variety of topics. Wikinews attended a presentation by Eric M. Johnson from the United States Department of State. Eric, a former NCO in the U.S. Marines, is the lead for the Knowledge Management Action team in the department’s Office of eDiplomacy, and involved in department’s use of Web 2.0 technologies for knowledge management. This includes blogs, and the key focus of his talk, Wiki culture in the U.S. Department of State.

Eric opened his presentation with an introduction to the U.S. State Department, one of the oldest agencies of the American government, which today has around 57,000 employees worldwide. When formed in the 18th century their offices and diplomatic staff operated largely autonomously due to lack of ability to communicate rapidly. By the mid-20th century this had changed with the advent of telegraph lines, and changed again with the Cold War and security concerns bringing to the fore the well-known term, “need to know”.

Now, in the 21st century, the volume of internal communication generated by the department is a staggering 1,800,000 cables a year, 1.5 billion emails, production of around 500,000 print volumes, and maintenance of approximately one thousand websites. Both internal and externally facing.

A pilot project was set up, Diplopedia, a MediaWiki wiki running on the department’s internal network, which outside of the department of defence is one of the largest private networks operated by the U.S. government.

A grassroots effort, this project to promote knowledge sharing differs from the well-known Wikipedia in that it does not allow anonymous edits. There are around 1,000 registered users who have contributed over 4,400 pages. Integration with the Department of State’s internal search engine prioritises results from the wiki, increasing the popularity of the site such that it has received over 650,000 page views. Like Wikipedia, users are required to provide sources for entered information at the foot of the article, and users are warned that it is a starting point and not an authoritative source of information. Data on visa requirements and information from other static department sites has been incorporated into the wiki.

Eric described the project as just reaching critical mass and attracting increasing interest from other departments. Among the ingredients leading to the success of the project were the cultural change with increasing awareness of the technology from Wikipedia, the formation by the community of a welcoming committee, and the taking on of roles to carry out tasks such as drafting. A number of staff act as “gardeners” tending to the wiki content, keeping it fresh, and well cross-referenced. The continual updating is a novel concept to many of their employees.

Unlike Wikipedia, and many other projects using MediaWiki, none of the Diplopedia pages are locked or protected. This even includes their main page. To date there have been none of the content disputes that have been an issue on Wikipedia, and the use of the wiki to replace traditional websites which are far more time consuming to maintain is seen as a logical extension of the project.

Carried out with no outside help, and by learning from others’ mistakes, the department has adopted mechanisms for assuming that contributions are well-intentioned, and has a body for oversight in the event of a dispute.

With the success of the project, eDiplomacy plans to introduce a separate, classified wiki. They will also expand the effort to compile biographies of foreign leaders, which was pioneered by the U.S. missions in Italy and Germany. This effort has proven valuable when combined with a version of the site available on portable devices such as the Blackberry.

The future holds moves to seek more support from management and integration with their primary authentication system. Among the features on the main page to keep the project interesting to staff is a “Diploquiz” which poses a weekly trivia question which can be answered from somewhere within the wiki.

Oil spill reported in Gulf of Mexico

Tuesday, December 26, 2006

At least 21,000 gallons of crude oil has spilled into the Gulf of Mexico near the United States mainland coast, about 30 miles off the shore of Galveston, Texas. The U.S. Coast Guard says that oil is still leaking at a rate of 80 to 400 gallons a day.

The High Island Pipeline began to leak on Sunday and was immediately shut down when a pressure loss was detected. The pipeline is owned by Plains All American Pipeline who state that the incident is “under investigation” and that officials are working to “minimize the impact of the incident.”

“A medium crude oil pipeline ruptured 30 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, and leaked approximately 21,000 gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico Sunday, December 24,” said a press release by Coast Guard.

“There’s a 60-yard-wide oil sheen that extends for about half a mile. It is still leaking slowly, about 80 to 400 gallons a day,” added the Coast Guard.

Reports say that the oil is traveling away from any shoreline and that remaining oil is being suctioned out of the pipeline. Ships in the area have not been diverted.

“All appropriate agencies have been notified. Plains, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Texas General Land Office are working within a unified command system consisting of Federal and state agencies and oil spill response organizations to manage and mitigate this incident. In addition, Plains has activated its spill response plan to contain and clean up the spill. At present, Plains has mobilized Airborne Support, Inc., Clean Gulf Associates and other additional resources in an effort to minimize the consequences of the incident,” said a press release by the Plains oil company.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Copper prices are rising. Between record copper imports from China, and a mining strike in Peru, the prices have climbed to over $8100 (United States dollars) a tonne, for a gain of $575 dollars over the last week. However the upward trend is not new, it has been climbing for quite some time. In April 2003, the price of copper was under $2000 a tonne.

The metal market has been tending up due to growth in the Chinese industrial production. This trickles down to the local level, where the buying price at scrap yards is ever climbing, making scrap metal collection a more profitable endeavour for individual people using pick up trucks or other such vehicles to collect and cash in the scrap metal at metal buying yards. It can be collected via agreements with businesses, from the garbage, or, sometimes, by theft.

Copper prices fell today on the NYMEX commodity exchange from US$3.7545 per pound to US$3.7125 based on the July futures contract.

ICJ orders Russia to stop Ukrainian invasion ‘immediately’

Friday, March 18, 2022

On Wednesday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) directed Russia to “immediately suspend the military operations” in Ukraine in a 13–2 vote of representatives. The ruling against the Russian invasion of Ukraine was opposed by Russia and China.

Ukraine filed the case on February 26, two days after the Russian invasion began. Russia justified the incursion as a special military operation to protect Russian groups in Eastern Ukraine from genocide, which Ukraine says is unfounded. During the hearing, Russia insisted “it was acting in self-defense”.

Ukrainian representative to the ICJ Anton Korynevych demanded “Russia must be stopped”. Ukraine said the United Nations Genocide Convention doesn’t permit invasion as defense against genocide, and denied committing or planning any such acts.

The court ruled in Ukraine’s favor. It reasoned, “the civilian population affected by the present conflict is extremely vulnerable. The ‘special military operation’ being conducted by the Russian Federation has resulted in numerous civilian deaths and injuries.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the victory on Twitter: “Ukraine gained a complete victory in its case”. He also wrote: “Ignoring the order will isolate Russia even further.”

Russia had earlier boycotted the ICJ hearing with a March 7 filing saying the court lacks jurisdiction on the matter. Even though the ICJ ruled in favor of Ukraine, it has no executive right to enforce the verdict.

Russia’s military continues to strike Ukrainian cities and destroy civilian structures. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that about 3 million Ukrainians had taken refuge in nearby countries since the invasion.

Sony faces class action lawsuits for DRM

Friday, November 11, 2005

California, Italy and New York are the first to bring litigation against Sony BMG‘s digital rights management (DRM) software found in at least 20 music discs released by Sony. The software automatically installs after the user agrees to a end user license agreement (EULA) before the music disc can be played, and includes a rootkit that can create vulnerabilities in the user’s Windows computer. One trojan horse exploiting the hole has already been discovered online.

The California lawsuit, filed on November 1, claims that the software violates the Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the Consumer Protection Against Computer Spyware Act, and the California Unfair Competition Law. The upcoming lawsuit in New York would seek restitution for consumers nationwide.

Mathew Gilliat-Smith, the CEO of First 4 Internet, the company that created the software, claims it is “benign content.” Meanwhile, in an NPR interview, a Sony BMG Music Entertainment Vice President said, “Most people, I think, don’t even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?”

Sony and First 4 Internet have released “patches” and uninstall kits, after programmer Mark Russinovich discovered the hidden files from the rootkit. However, these uninstall kits are only installable online through an ActiveX application, a technology many security experts advise users to deactivate due to its high execution privileges on host computers.

In addition to questions of legality, the DRM software has come under fire from media rights activists and even artists who unwittingly found their albums more stringently protected than they approved of. Furthermore, Sony’s DRM software “phones home” each time one of their CDs is played. The license agreement does not reveal this behavior, nor does it acknowledge the existence of the rootkit itself.

Thomas Hesse of Sony BMG recently told the San Francisco Chronicle that 60 percent of Sony BMG CDs released in the United States currently have copy protection measures, and that they aim to hit 100 percent by early 2006.
