The Life And Work Of A Videogame Designer

The Fascinating World of a Videogame Designer

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, a videogame designer holds a unique position. They tread the fine line between art and technology, and are tasked with creating entire worlds, characters, and stories that players can immerse themselves in. Videogame design is an interdisciplinary field, requiring knowledge in various areas such as computer graphics, artificial intelligence, interactive storytelling, and music production.

So, what exactly does a videogame designer do? A designer’s main objective is to create engaging and fun user experiences. They often create the conceptual side of the games, defining how they will look and feel. Videogame designers have the challenging task of mapping out every possible player movement, improving gameplay mechanics, constructing the game environment, and designing the gameplay rules. They create storylines and character bios, maintain design level documentation, and collaborate with other designers and engineers to implement game features.

Working in this creative field requires a high degree of technical prowess, as well as storytelling, artistic ability, and often, a deep appreciation for games. A solid mathematical foundation is also crucial since algebra, geometry, and tiling are involved in creating the 2D or 3D spaces that you see in games.

While game design and game development often go hand-in-hand, they are not the same thing. Game design focuses on the creative aspect of a game – designing characters, setting up different levels, creating rules and storylines. On the other hand, game development involves taking these designs and turning them into a functioning game using programming languages like C++ or Python. Videogame designers and developers need to work closely together, pooling their respective expertise to create compelling games.

Another vital aspect of videogame design is music production. Music and sound effects set the mood and tone for a game. The music production in a game can make the environment feel more real, enhance gameplay, and increase the player’s emotional connection to the game. Whether it’s the tense music that plays during a boss fight or the tranquil melodies that float through an open-world exploration, music production is a critical element in creating a captivating gaming experience.

Becoming a videogame designer does not have a definitive path. Some have followed a traditional route, obtaining a degree in game design or computer science. In contrast, others have built their portfolios through self-teaching and personal projects, breaking into the industry based on their demonstrable skills and creative acumen. Regardless of the path taken, it’s clear that a successful career in video game design requires a passion for gaming, creativity, technical skills, and a strong work ethic.

Overall, the role of a videogame designer is a complex and fascinating one. They exist at the intersection of art, technology, and storytelling, using their skills in design, programming, and music production to create memorable and engaging gaming experiences for players. As the videogame industry continues to grow and evolve, so too will the role and responsibilities of the videogame designer.

Video Game Creators: Exploring The Craft And Australia Film Schools

The world of video games extends far beyond the simple enjoyment of playing. Behind each gaming experience is an intricate process paved by imagination, creativity, and technical expertise. This is brought to life by a video game creator, an artist equipped with a blend of technical skills and a rich narrative imagination. This article discusses these unique individuals responsible for the riveting gaming experiences enjoyed today and dives into how Australia film schools contribute to nurturing these talents.

Video game creators tread a fascinating path of storytelling, game design, character development, scenario setting, and technological understanding. Their unique artistic and technical proficiencies breathe life into digital landscapes, developing them into interactive media. Games have evolved with time, from basic iterations like Pong and Pac-Man to today’s complex and immersive games like ‘The Witcher,’ ‘God of War,’ and ‘Red Dead Redemption.’ Each improvement can be attributed to the video game creators who tirelessly push the envelope of innovation and creativity.

The journey to becoming a video game creator usually begins with a passion for games, coupled with a knack for problem-solving, creativity, and a grounding in math and computer programming. However, these raw skills may not be enough to develop complex games. This is where institutions that team these skills come in- universities, technical schools, and notably, film schools.

Australia, with its growing reputation in the digital media industry, is home to some of the world’s best film schools, offering courses that cater to budding video game creators. Ranging from game design and development, 3D animation to computer graphics, these comprehensive courses are designed to sculpt the aspirants into industry-ready professionals.

One might question, ‘Australia film schools’ – why film schools for game design?’ The answer to this lies in the fact that modern video games are now more cinematic than ever. With an increasing focus on narrative and story, video games today share many elements with films, including storylines, characters, camera angles, and even soundtrack. This change necessitates an understanding of film-making principles too, an aspect which film schools are brilliantly equipped to instill.

Australia film schools, such as the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Sydney Film School, and JMC Academy offer dedicated courses for gaming. AFTRS offers a Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, which provides a thorough grounding in all aspects of screen production. JMC Academy offers a Bachelor’s degree in Game Development where students can choose to specialize in Game Design or Game Art, focusing on either the technical aspects or the visual aspects of game development.

Apart from offering an all-inclusive curriculum, these institutions provide a springboard for students to get real-world experience through internships in Australia’s growing game industry, from indie start-ups to big studios like Halfbrick, creators of the hit game ‘Fruit Ninja.’ This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience ensures students are well-equipped to make an impact in the industry as professional video game creators.

Overall, the journey of a video game creator is one of passion, technical expertise, and relentless creativity. As the industry evolves, so does the need for a comprehensive education that includes cinematic understanding; a need that Australia film schools seem perfectly equipped to satisfy. These institutions are playing an increasingly important role in facilitating the growth and success of the next generation of game creators, thus shaping the future of the gaming industry.

How To Become A Videogame Designer

The pursuit of becoming a videogame designer can be an exciting venture, particularly for those passionate about gaming. Videogames are no longer only about entertainment; they have expanded into various domains such as education, science, and psychological therapy. With the growing acceptance and allure of videogames, there is a rising demand for skilled videogame designers. So, how do you embark upon this creative and technical endeavor? Here’s a comprehensive guide.

At first, it’s paramount to understand what a videogame designer does. A videogame designer conceptualizes, designs, and often plays a significant role in the production of games. They are the ones behind the intriguing narratives, engaging game mechanics, and the challenging levels that captivate players in the gaming world. A well-designed game can create an immersive, entertaining experience that players relish, which is why the role of a videogame designer is so significant.

To become a videogame designer, one typically begins with education. A bachelor’s degree in game design, computer science, or related field can provide a robust foundation for understanding the complex elements that go into creating a game. These programs often cover coursework in graphical design, computer programming, and game theory, providing practical and theoretical know-how essential for a game designer.

There are numerous ‘visual communication degree schools‘ that provide specialized programs tailored towards game design. A visual communication degree can also be beneficial as it focuses on how information and ideas can be expressed visually, a critical skill in game design. These schools offer programs that combine the creative elements of design with the technical skills necessary to execute a game, culminating in strong foundational skills for aspiring game designers.

Apart from formal education, an aspiring videogame designer needs extensive knowledge and familiarity with games. Playing a vast array of games and understanding what makes a game fun, engaging, and successful is crucial. It is also beneficial to grasp different genres of games, platforms, and their specific design elements. Furthermore, one should seek to understand the market trends and anticipate what the audience will want in the future.

Building experience is another critical step toward becoming a videogame designer. Many start building their portfolios by creating independent games, often collaborating with fellow gaming enthusiasts. This practical experience provides a realistic glimpse of the process, challenges, and satisfaction of creating a game. It also serves as a tangible demonstration of one’s capabilities for potential employers.

Networking within the industry is crucial. Attend gaming conventions, join online communities, and connect with experienced videogame designers. These interactions can provide essential insights and opportunities, aiding in breaking into the competitive video game industry.

A career in videogame design requires constant learning and adaptation. The rapidly evolving technology and gaming trends necessitate staying updated and continually refining and growing one’s skills. Therefore, taking up advanced courses and certifications can prove beneficial.

In conclusion, the journey of becoming a videogame designer is full of creativity, fun, and continuous learning, combined with a solid foundation in technology and design. With the right education, practical experience, extensive gaming knowledge, and networking, one can navigate the path to success in the rapidly growing and engaging field of videogame design.

Pros And Cons Of Regular Bachelor’s Degrees And Top Up Degrees

By Donald Pang

Earning a bachelor’s degree used to take around four years. But after the implementation of intensive curriculums, three-year courses became available. Soon after, top-up degrees were introduced. And now, students with a diploma can earn a relevant bachelor’s degree in just one year.

The issue of a traditional degree and a top-up degree has been highly debated. Are students gaining enough practical experience when they study for three years? And are top-up degree students educated enough to join the workforce?

Here, we will discuss the pros and cons of a regular degree and a top-up degree.

Regular Bachelor’s Degrees

These degree programs span an average of three years or more. Diploma holders from relevant fields are usually eligible. You can also apply for these programs after achieving certain scores on your GCE ‘A’ levels or academic qualifications of equivalent value.

Most bachelor’s degree courses will have both theory and practical modules in varying ratios. It is rare to find courses that are 100% theory-based. In many cases, project work from these programs can give you field exposure.

To increase your employ-ability, pick a school that gives you opportunities to build a strong portfolio and industry contacts. Consider a dual education degree for a 50-50 exposure to formal theory and experience industry standards through company attachments.

Pros:

– Maximum time to plot your career course carefully. – Plenty of practice to fine-tune your theory and/or practical skills before joining the workforce. – Learn a broader range of subjects for a clear understanding of future options.

Cons:

– Take longer to graduate. This makes you more dependent on others for financial support. – Expensive tuition fees. You will take longer to repay your tuition loan.

Top-up Degrees

These degrees are widely common in the design and business field. Professionals with diplomas find this a popular option to further their studies. A top-up degree usually spans a year or two. And is ideal for those who want to spend minimal time in school, yet achieve maximum enhancement for their existing skills.

Some curriculum rely heavily on exemptions to cut the amount of time required to graduate. Exemptions allow students who have taken similar subjects to be excused from those modules.

If you have a clear idea of what you want for your future career, consider signing up for a top-up degree after you graduate with your diploma.

Pros:

– Less spent on tuition fee. – Intensive curriculum allows you to learn skills in a shorter time. – Students graduate faster and can hunt for jobs while their peers are still schooling.

Cons:

– Learn lesser modules in comparison to a fuller curriculum. This will make you rely more on your portfolio and experience rather than academic transcript when applying for jobs. – Might not be as recognized when competing with other candidates for jobs in top companies.

Regular Bachelor’s Degree vs Top-up Degrees

Choosing the right type of degree depends on the economic conditions of your country. If the economy is looking good with plenty of job opportunities, a top-up degree will be the best option. With less time spent in school, you can put more effort into landing your dream job.

However, if the economy is down, taking a bachelor’s degree with more modules will have two benefits. First off, it increases your market value. Second, it reduces the effect of a bad economy on you. Chances are that when you graduate, the economy would have improved. And finding a job will be easier.

In either case, choose a good school. And make sure that you will have enough opportunity to build a strong portfolio and also, industry contacts.

Is the economy in your country down? Consider studying abroad to increase your future career opportunities. Raffles Education Corporation operates 38 colleges specializing in Design, Business and Science in 14 countries; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Singapore, Sydney in Australia, Auckland in New Zealand, India (Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore), Colombo in Sri Lanka, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Hong Kong, China (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou), Vietnam, Bangkok in Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia.

Forty Year Old Becomes A Physician At 50

Submitted by: Sean Birdsell

Back in the year 1964, a woman, 40 years of age applied for admission to the local university’s college of literature, science and the arts in raggedy farm clothes. This woman who proclaimed that she wanted to become a doctor came fresh from a chicken farm armed with nothing but a convent education. A skeptical admissions officer sent her to a university psychologist before approving the application.

Spring following ten years, this woman was able to set a personal record which is hard to be repeated according to the university spokesperson. They also add how great this woman was for in the course of those 10 long years, she struggled to keep up with the demands of premedical and medical school requirements for her doctorate degree and at the same time, she and her husband raised their ten children.

This lady physician has a lot on her hands because the following year, she will have her internship at a local hospital to be followed by an application for a 3 year residency program at an eastern medical center for her intensive internal medicine practice. She intends to have a complete career in medicine. Twenty five years would be the life span of a medical career but I am resolute to be in this career more than those years.

Her husband who is a chicken farmer operating a 145 acre ranch for 15 years, suddenly decided in 1964, decided to have a much needed career boost and requested his wife to find something that will generate income for their family. He became the local research laboratory’s electronics instrumentation specialist. His wife decided to go to school and also worked on the side at the university’s blood processing laboratory.

While she shares everyone asks me this, she asserts that it’s not all that tough to be a mother of ten along with being a working student. But then, we only scrape by and had to be watchful with our money. But without me even asking for it, all of them pitched in. Bill being a lively father was always helpful while the kids played out remarkable roles as well. Cooking is far from my forte so I only look after the dishes. It turns out well during times that I’d cook and handle the dishes.

The woman managed to earn a 3 point 2 average in her premed program and then spent a year as a part time graduate student in biology while trying to convince the medical school to accept her. For her, medical school did not only enrich her but her entire family as well. One good example is that their kids get to meet a big group of people from teachers to other students of medicine who go to their home. They got to know many amazing people and learned to respect people who come from different income or status groups.

How does it feel to have a mother who’s always away, is the question that my daughter was once asked. She retorted that she perceived her as another person and not just a parent. Now, only two of the kids are left at home. These are their two boys a 14 year old currently studying in a local junior high school while the one who is three years older than him recently graduated from high school. But their eldest son who manages a motorcycle store in their area manages to be close to them even as he is already 29 years old. When asked about her medical education, this lady physician states that one must handle her roles as a doctor while maintaining her own identity as a woman. She calls it an avenue of personal enrichment and a duty she had to accomplish and thanks to these, she is a triumphant lady.
