Back in the year 1964, a woman, 40 years of age applied for admission to the local university’s college of literature, science and the arts in raggedy farm clothes. This woman who proclaimed that she wanted to become a doctor came fresh from a chicken farm armed with nothing but a convent education. A skeptical admissions officer sent her to a university psychologist before approving the application.
Spring following ten years, this woman was able to set a personal record which is hard to be repeated according to the university spokesperson. They also add how great this woman was for in the course of those 10 long years, she struggled to keep up with the demands of premedical and medical school requirements for her doctorate degree and at the same time, she and her husband raised their ten children.
This lady physician has a lot on her hands because the following year, she will have her internship at a local hospital to be followed by an application for a 3 year residency program at an eastern medical center for her intensive internal medicine practice. She intends to have a complete career in medicine. Twenty five years would be the life span of a medical career but I am resolute to be in this career more than those years.
Her husband who is a chicken farmer operating a 145 acre ranch for 15 years, suddenly decided in 1964, decided to have a much needed career boost and requested his wife to find something that will generate income for their family. He became the local research laboratory’s electronics instrumentation specialist. His wife decided to go to school and also worked on the side at the university’s blood processing laboratory.
While she shares everyone asks me this, she asserts that it’s not all that tough to be a mother of ten along with being a working student. But then, we only scrape by and had to be watchful with our money. But without me even asking for it, all of them pitched in. Bill being a lively father was always helpful while the kids played out remarkable roles as well. Cooking is far from my forte so I only look after the dishes. It turns out well during times that I’d cook and handle the dishes.
The woman managed to earn a 3 point 2 average in her premed program and then spent a year as a part time graduate student in biology while trying to convince the medical school to accept her. For her, medical school did not only enrich her but her entire family as well. One good example is that their kids get to meet a big group of people from teachers to other students of medicine who go to their home. They got to know many amazing people and learned to respect people who come from different income or status groups.
How does it feel to have a mother who’s always away, is the question that my daughter was once asked. She retorted that she perceived her as another person and not just a parent. Now, only two of the kids are left at home. These are their two boys a 14 year old currently studying in a local junior high school while the one who is three years older than him recently graduated from high school. But their eldest son who manages a motorcycle store in their area manages to be close to them even as he is already 29 years old. When asked about her medical education, this lady physician states that one must handle her roles as a doctor while maintaining her own identity as a woman. She calls it an avenue of personal enrichment and a duty she had to accomplish and thanks to these, she is a triumphant lady.
