Demonstrators protest Condoleezza Rice’s trip to Australia

Thursday, March 16, 2006

Anti-war demonstrators in Sydney, Australia on Thursday dubbed U.S. Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice a “war criminal” and “murderer.” Two protesters were evicted and five people were arrested during protests against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Dr Rice, on a three-day trip to Australia, said she understood why people found it hard to be positive about Iraq when all they saw on their television screens was violence.

Soon after Rice began her speech at the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, two protesters shouted from the rear of the auditorium, “Condoleezza Rice, you are a war criminal,” and “Iraqi blood is on your hands and you cannot wash that blood away.” Standing with their palms towards her, the young man and woman repeated their accusation until security intervened to remove them from the hall.

About 15 minutes into Rice’s address, a third protester appeared at a balcony door, interrupting her speech as she referred to freedom. “What kind of freedom are you talking about? You are a murderer,” said the demonstrator before he was quietly escorted from the hall. “I’m very glad to see that democracy is well and alive here at the university,” she said.

In her speech, Rice sought to justify the U.S. occupation of Iraq, describing Iraqis as now more free. One student asked about abuses committed by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. She said the abuses had made her “sick to her stomach.” However, she defended Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where human rights groups say detainees are held in inhumane conditions and in detention flouting international laws.

Before Rice began her speech, about 50 protesters were gathered at the front gates of the Conservatorium. The group were confronted by police on horseback and by police dogs. Police used the horses to charge into the group of activists and push them back, as a police helicopter hovered.

A police spokeswoman said the group was blocking pedestrian access to the building and that police had spent more than 20 minutes warning them to move. The police then moved in and pushed the crowd back 20 metres. Police say five people have been charged with “hindering police in the execution of their duties.”

The “Stop the War Coalition” says Rice is a “war criminal” and is not welcome in Australia. The group’s spokeswoman, Anna Samson, says the protest is one of many planned in the lead-up to the third anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Iraq on March 20.

Paddy Gibson, from the University of Sydney’s Student’s Council, says the protest is in opposition to the Iraq war, and to the use of the University of Sydney’s campus to host Rice, “the most powerful woman in the world,” who they say is a war criminal. “They’re saying, ‘… you’ve got Sydney Uni’s support to stand up and peddle your murderous hate speeches,’ which is what we see it,” he said.

“You’ve got 180,000 people killed, as we said, for no other reason than strategic control of the region’s oil resources. And the anti-Muslim racism that’s been whipped up to justify this war is being felt by Sydney University students,” said Mr Gibson.

Photo report: Anime North convention brings fans to Toronto

Friday, June 1, 2018

In Toronto last weekend, North American anime and manga convention Anime North was held. Anime North sprawled across multiple venues, including the Toronto Congress Centre, as a fan-run celebration of Japanese pop culture. The event ran from May 25 to 27. Wikinews’s Nicholas Moreau was in attendance to photograph the event.

Montrealer “Aileen Cosplay” was wearing an outfit of Rapunzel from the Disney animated film Tangled, when Wikinews photographed her.

Wikinews talked with her after the event, learning that she was one of the “Estrada Sisters”, who have been dressing up as pop culture characters for roughly a decade. “Cosplay is something we do together as sisters, as well as with our close friends. It’s a hobby and passion that we all share and have fun with.”

The cosplayer explained that the activity “integrates a wide range of interests for us, from makeup, to sewing, to crafting and prop-making.”

“When deciding on cosplays,” she offers, “we consider how attracted we are to the character as they were written, as well as their aesthetic. We tend to stray towards Disney, as we all share a common passion for the magic that it brings to its audience, and we love having the opportunity to bring that magic to life every time we put on a costume.”

Binrand Cosplay tells Wikinews that for her, cosplay “is a huge creative outlet whether that’s sewing, crafting, armour building, styling wigs, new makeup challenges etc. I love that it gives me creative freedom and that the end result I can share with hundreds of people that have a love and passion for the same character or series that I am cosplaying from.” The icy effect on Shyvana from League of Legends gave her reason to work with Transpa Art, a product from a company called Worbla.

She noted that the activity also allows her to “meet new friends that are just excited about something” as she is.

She chooses characters she’s become attached to, as her outfit. “Often it’s a combination of similar personality as my own, a character that has gone through similar struggles as myself, I like the look, and that they just plain badass! I also like a challenge. Having been doing cosplay for as long as I have I like to switch things up and learn something new every year.”

Methods To Check For Url Availability

Submitted by: Frederick Gowan

A URL, or Uniform Resource Locater, has become the standard for website identification. The URL is what you type into the address bar of a browser so that you can go to that specific website. As an example, Google’s URL is www.google.com. However, the www. part is pretty irrelevant now. Also, the URL is not to be mistaken for the domain name. The two terms are normaly used virtually interchangeably, which they nearly are. In a technical sense, the domain name is the main part of a website, such as www.mysite.com. If there are pages inside the site, one may be listed as www.mysite.com/user/content. In this case, www.mysite.com/user/content is the URL of the webpage, while www.mysite.com remains the overall domain name. With the swift growth rate of the Internet (about 40,000 new registered domain names a day), it can be very difficult to figure out which site names are already in use. This information is important to know if you are looking to establish your own webpage or if you execute web analytics for a living.

Naturally, checking the validity of domain names always involves an Internet connection. It would be impossible to monitor the domain name modifications and keep them available offline. Consequently, there are a number of websites used to decide on availability of a domain name. One such website is very simplistic in that it offers a box into which you may enter your domain name. The website then searches for a website by that name and returns whether the address is in use or not.

Luckily, a program is available from http://www.hothotsoftware.com/urlchecker_websitechecker_software/ that permits for a colossal search of domain name registrations. By going to the website and searching for Check if URL Exists’ you can find a program for your exact purpose. After opening the software, you will notice that it is written in a standard user interface so nearly anyone experienced with a computer can control the software. The application also operates completely within a single window. This prevents any possibility of getting lost within the program. The window of the application is split into three main parts. The upper half of the window has a box that can be populated with potential domain names. These names can be anything that you wish to check the availability. After entering all of the domain names you need to check, there is a function towards the bottom of the window which enables for added domain name searches. This function is titled as Add These Domain Types to List’. Within the field you can enter .com, .net, .biz, etc. The program will then add these suffixes to any other domain names you have already entered. As an example, if you enter mysite.com in the upper half of the window and proceed to run the Add These Domains’ function the program will search for the availability of mysite.com, mysite.net, and mysite.biz. This will allow for faster searching across a appreciably broader selection of names.

The bottom half of the window is divided into two sections. The left half is labeled as List of Good Domains’ and the domain names presently registered will appear here. Alternatively, any currently unregistered domain names will appear on the right half of the window. This enables for a very quick comparison amongst your results.

To learn more about this software, please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGMcimwObX0#t=90. If you are in the business of inspecting the Internet it may be essential to know which domain names are available. Employ this software and keep up on any and all changes in domain registration.

CyanogenMod: Open-source smartphone OS goes commercial

Thursday, September 19, 2013

File:CyanogenMod Cid.svg

The developers of CyanogenMod, an open source free Android-based operating system for smartphones, announced yesterday their incorporation following a successful venture capital campaign which netted the open-source project a US$7 million nest egg, and plan to roll out a simple installation app on Google Play for their Android firmware.

Android runs nearly 80% of new mobile devices; CyanogenMod operates on at least 7 or 8 million of those. CyanogenMod replaces the read-only-memory image in android devices which have been ‘rooted’ —control acquired of the device’s superuser account— allowing continuing development for, and backporting abilities of new generations of the operating system to, older devices.

Investor Mitch Lasky wrote on his blog “We believe that CM is poised to become one of the largest mobile operating systems in the world.” Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures are part of the capital providers to form Cyanogen Inc.

“The only limitation we have right now is with the number of engineers and designers we currently have. As we hire more people and build this company, we’ll be able to work on so many cool things”, said Koushik ‘koush’ Dutta, who took questions alongside Steve ‘cyanogen’ Kondik and team social media manager Abhisek “ciwrl” Devkota in a Reddit Ask Me Anything event shortly after making the announcement on the CyanogenMod blog. The team of 17, including Boost co-founder Kirt McMaster as CEO, are in Palo Alto, California and Seattle.

Kondik says Cyanogen mod is named after him. “I’m terrible with names, so I just slapped ‘mod’ onto the end of my handle and ran with it”, he explained in the incorporation announcement.

An early question raised in the Reddit event concerned profit-making: “Monetization isn’t an immediate concern and our investors […] feel the same”, said Dutta, adding “Creating disruption in a multibilion dollar market is enough to make any investor raise their eyebrow.” This means CyanogenMod would continue to be free. Follow questions asked if the company was planning to release their own model of android device. “We certainly couldn’t take on the monumental task of building/testing hardware . Hardware would be one of many potential very long term paths we could take”, said Dutta.

The firm’s first announced step is to improve the process of installing the software on owner’s devices, which Kondik described as “hideous”. A new installer app is planned to be released “in the coming weeks” on Google Play. The installer app will not require rooting the device, instead installing by simply clicking a button.

A further step, broadly described without any details, is a project with an unnamed original equipment manufacturer (OEM). “We have a least one OEM partnership in the works, there will be an announcement next week regarding our plans there”, said Kondik. The team mentioned OEM licensing several times during the Q&A session on Reddit.

In addition to these corporate steps, there were questions regarding the roadmap for development of the ROM, which already has improvements regarding privacy and security over the native android loader. With “plenty of things in the product pipeline already” Dutta lists additional security features, AirPlay mirroring, screen recording, and Voice+ as upcoming. The mood throughout the event was jovial, with humourous questions such as “can you guys PLEASE release a CM build for my toaster? I’m not sure what model it is, but it’s white and I got it at Savers.” Kondik promised “Ship it to me and I’ll duct tape a G1 running CM to it”. Dutta said his “10 of your favorite lines of source code” are “The ones that worked when they shouldn’t have.”

Aerosmith sued over late cancellation of gig in Maui, Hawaii

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Fans of the American hard rock band Aerosmith have launched legal action against the band in response to a late cancellation of a scheduled concert on the Hawaiian Island of Maui.

Attorney Brandee Faria filed a class action suit in Hawaii Circuit Court on October 19. The suit alleges that the band’s cancellation cost fans between US$500,000 (€349,944) and $3 million (€2.1 million) in travel and accommodation costs, as well as other related expenses.

The sold-out September 26 Maui concert – originally planned months before as the final show of a world tour that began in Brazil in April – was canceled by the band on the basis that they could not make it to the island in time after a September 24 concert in Chicago. The Chicago concert, which attracted 18,000 people, was rescheduled at the last minute after the original September 10 concert date had been postponed due to illness.

The band canceled the show at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium, which was set to be attended by 9,000 people, and apologized to fans. The band’s management company, HK Management Inc., gave no initial reason when they canceled on September 20, but blamed logistical reasons by the next day.

However, just days later, on September 29, the band traveled to the neighbor island of Oahu to play a corporate event in Honolulu for Toyota car dealers and private guests. An audience of 6,000 people celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Japanese automobile manufacturer at the University of Hawaii, with Toyota paying $500,000 (€349,944) to hire the campus. Aerosmith received $1 million (€700,000) to perform at the event. Faria alleges that Aerosmith abandoned the scheduled public concert on Maui in favor of the more lucrative corporate event on Oahu.

“…Defendants simply canceled the only public performance by Aerosmith in favor of the larger Chicago venue and the lucrative, private concert for the Toyota car dealers,” the complaint states.

Local officials had hoped the concert would attract other big names to the island.

Faria said that “I’ve had people contact me being out of pocket at much as $800 or $900,” adding that if the cancellation is found to be deceptive ticket holders may be eligible for a minimum of $1,000 each. The complaint also says that those aged 62 or over should receive at least $5,000 each. Currently about a dozen ticket holders are involved with the suit. If the action is approved by a judge, steps will be taken to contact everyone who purchased a ticket.

Can I Make Money From Qnet Mlm Business?

QNET Ltd is a multinational direct selling network marketing conglomerate with headquarters based in Hong Kong. It has been in existence since 1998. QNET Ltd has footprints in over 22 countires with subsidiaries in all these locations.. QNET Ltd uses word of mouth promotion and ecommerce to promote as well as distribute it’s products. This type of interactive selling has worked well for QNET and its IRs

QNET products range from Luxury and Collectible Products like rare coins, jewelry, watches; Vacation and Holiday packages; Wellness and Health products like the bio disc, pendant, personal care products; Telecommunication packages and much more.

To start a business with QNET, one needs to buy a product of their choice. On completing this step, the distributor qualifies to be an independent representative(IR). A virtual office is given to the IR and they are now free to disribute products and promote their business

QNET uses the balanced binary compensation plan. IR in this case will have to refer a minimum of 2 individuals to the company who inturn purchase products of their choice from QNET The IR can then start earning commissions. The best part about this is that QNET does not charge on monthly basis and the members purchase products only once If you have been online, I am sure you have read one QNET Review after another. There are so many inconsistent reviews and sundry ideologies from different individuals about QNET. This is quite common in MLM industry

The honest truth is, QNET is a legal network marketing company with phenomenal products and a moneymaking business model. It is not a scam. I use their products and love them. If you are thinking about starting a QNET business, you must know that success depends on individuals. It is not a get rich quick scheme. You need to work hard and to be patient. This is why so many have been frustrated because they thought it was a way to get rich quick.

QNET network marketing business, like life, is what you make it. And as Shakespeare says, “this world is a stage and we are all players in different scenes”. Those who play well go on. Those who play badly will blame the game, the mentor, the curtains and the costume. Hope this QNET review has answered some of your queries.

Business tools for virtual office in addition to physical training is rendered by QNET They have fantastic products. Note that, one can attain success with QNET only if he/she dreams big and plans to create difference not only in their lives for also lives of others

Solar Power: An Alternative Energy Whose Time Has Come

By Kelly Gillis

So you’re finally tired of those exorbitant electricity bills, or, you’re catching onto a “greener” way of life. Either way, solar power may have many advantages for you and your home.

There are many obvious positives to using solar power. One is that solar power produces no waste. We all benefit when there are fewer pollutants in the air. The rays of the sun, which are the source of solar power are free, and, without doubt, the sun will rise each morning. In other words, solar power is an absolutely free and renewable energy source. Even local governments are jumping on the solar bandwagon. Perhaps you may have noticed in your local area your state highways using solar powered signs warning of roadwork.

There are initial high costs involved in outfitting your home for solar power but the savings realized over the years will quickly make up for the start-up costs.

The most popular way of harnessing solar power for most homeowners is through the use of solar panels. These solar panels are made up of what are called photovoltaic cells which are able to covert sunlight directly into electricity. These solar panels are placed on the roof of a building. The size of the solar panel is determined by the amount of energy needed. The panels can easily be added onto if needs increase. Some new homes are now being built using these photovoltaic cells as roof tiles.

These solar panels are generally easy to install for most DIY’ers. They require virtually no maintenance, and will last for decades.

There are other ways to take advantage of the sun’s energy. If you are building a new home and have solar power in mind talk with your architect. You can have your new home built facing the sun where it can take full advantage of the energy and warmth. Have large windows installed to take in as much light as possible, especially in winter months when the sun is lower in the sky. Plant trees that will shade your home in the hot summertime.

Some states offer their residents solar energy grants that will repay a portion of the costs associated with installation. These grants give homeowners incentives for solar water and photovoltaic systems, with some refunding up to $5,000.00. Check with your local energy administration bureau.

Baby in California born with 12 functioning fingers and toes, in a rare case of polydactylism

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

A six-pound infant born in San Francisco, California has six perfectly formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet, so that it isn’t considered a disability or deformity, say doctors at Saint Luke’s Hospital who were amazed by the oddity.

In a medical rarity, super baby Kamani Hubbard was born two weeks ago with 24 working digits. He is healthy and home with his parents in Daly City, California. Polydactyly, a congenital disorder is not uncommon in humans and animals, including cats, but to happen on both hands and feet is a rare hereditary condition.

“Nurses and doctors, looked so normal they couldn’t tell, they told me he was six pounds in good health, that was all they said,” said Miryoki Gross, Hubbard’s mother. Her baby’s specialness didn’t even show up on prenatal ultrasounds. “I heard nothing before I gave birth so I’m still in shock, kinda,” Gross added. Despite the mother’s shock, Kamani’s father, Kris, was the first to notice the condition.

Polydactyly (from Ancient Greek means ‘?????’ (polus) or “many” + ‘????????’ (daktulos) “finger[s]”), also known as polydactylism, sexdactyly, hexadactyly, or hexadactylism, is a congenital physical disorder consisting of supernumerary fingers or toes.

In Kamani’s case, however, all of the digits are perfectly formed and function or work normally. “I was in amazement, it took a little time for me to take it all in,” said Kris, a postal worker, who has a family history of polydactylism, but none of his relatives can remember it happening on both hands and feet.

Mostly, cases of polydactyly are surgically corrected. Kris himself had nubs of sixth digits, which were removed during his early childhood, for having been non-functional. “My son has six fingers then I saw toes, and I thought, this is quite unique. Some family members have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes,” Kris noted.

“I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place. I realize children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than slight. But imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist, if nothing else think of their typing skills,” Dr. Treece remarked.

“I just want him to see what greatness will be in store for him,” said Kris.

Fully developed and functional extra digits on both hands and feet are considered very rare as a genetic trait in medical history, amid some partial development of an extra digit occurs about twice in every 1,000 white male births. Ordinarily, polydactylism appears as an extra piece of non-functional tissue, typically occurring as an extra finger, sometimes with a bone, but no joint.

“It’s merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing,” said Dr. Michael Treece, a St. Luke’s Hospital pediatrician, and the OBGYN who delivered Kamani. He has postaxial polydactyly, which is 10 times more likely to occur in black children, and also more likely to appear in boys.

Goliath, a figure in Old Testament, was depicted as having had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot.

Blues guitarist Hound Dog Taylor, Get Carter, Little Tich, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and several other figures in history have had polydactyly. Sid Wilson, a turntablist of Slipknot, had been born with an extra finger and toe on his hands and feet which were removed shortly after his birth as doctors considered them to be dead.

Eurovision ’82 winner Nicole talks about ‘Ein bißchen Frieden’, her success and the Contest today

Monday, February 2, 2009

It has been nearly 27 years since Nicole, then a high school student from the Saarland in extreme western Germany, sang a heartfelt plea for world peace on the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Harrogate, North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. That simple message was wrapped with success; she became the first German in Contest history to take home the grand prize. The song was a brainchild of her former record producer, Ralph Siegel, and would be their greatest achievement in their nearly three-decade partnership.

Afterward, she was propelled to stardom across Europe by recording versions of her winning song, “Ein bißchen Frieden” (A little peace), in many European languages. To this day, it was the last winning Eurovision song to top the charts in the United Kingdom; it also has the distinction of being the 500th #1 single on the British charts.

This newfound fame brought her music to audiences across Europe, and in time, into Asia as well. By the end of the 1980s, however, her fame subsided somewhat and she refocused her career domestically. Since 1980, she has released over 30 albums in Germany; her most recent offering, Mitten ins Herz (Right into your heart), was accompanied by a three-month “unplugged” tour that ended in the third week of January.

Now off the road, Nicole spoke with Wikinews’ Mike Halterman about her past success, her life and career today, and her overall impressions of the Eurovision Song Contest, both past and present. This is the first in a series of interviews with past Eurovision contestants, which will be published sporadically in the lead-up to mid-May’s next contest in Moscow.
