Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

How Parabond Hardwood Floor Polish Can Help You?

By William I. Neil

Floors are the base or the vast sea of attraction in a room. As the floors are the only part of the room that covers the maximum area and are far more observable than any other part or any other furniture. It is a must to keep our floors neat and tidy as they are repeatedly stepped over by people all round the clock. Cleaning the floors must be done as a daily schedule so as to keep them shining for several years. Apart from cleaning them daily, we must polish them at least once in six month. Whether it is a wooden floor or a cemented floor, one must have a proper eye on tear or shear of floors as they can adversely affect the beauty of the room or hall.

Using any polish is not at all advisable. Only reputed ones must be used so as they do not cost you later in your life. I would advice you to use some of the reputed ones like this. I personally have felt that it is the best polish so far. Some years ago I experienced a heavy non-stop rain and there was water in our house. After 3-4 days when the water was gone and the rain stopped, I observed that all my floor polish has been ruined by water. I used to use some cheap floor polish. But after that one of my friends advised me to use it and since then my floors are always shining and completely polished.

After so many years of my use I can comment that parabond floor polish is simple fabulous. It has got the ability to put a shine on the floors and it looks as if the floors are completely new! The house where I used to live had some dogs, which scratched the floor and made me polish every month. I put 3 coats on the floor and it really looked great and it lasted for more days than my previous paint. Two coats are more than sufficient. Not to mislead, but one coat also gives the same brilliant shine. (It just wears off sooner). My kitchen is almost polished with parabond floor polish as we have a lot of water spreading on the floors with a continuous tariff. The only catch is that the dog scratches do show up more with the shine.

Last but not the least I want to tell to all the readers that guests do come to our home at least 4-5 times in a week on an average but we never dare to think, what left an impression in their mind after visiting our house. We must rethink about furniture, show-piece in our house. Do they really leave an impression on our guests? The answer is loud and clear ‘No’ as because furniture and show pieces are almost available in each and every house. The only obsession that differs is some thing unique. That touches the soul of our guests and they remember it for a pretty long time in their life. That unique quality is only obtained from ‘Parabond Hardwood Floor Polish’.

STS-116 launch scrubbed

Friday, December 8, 2006

NASA has scrubbed the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-116 to the International Space Station during the final stages of the countdown, after the weather conditions were considered unfavourable for launch, due to a low cloud ceiling and strong winds caused by a low front.

The launch, which was scheduled to be the third Shuttle launch this year, was to have occurred at 02:35 GMT at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, however it has now been rescheduled. The next possible launch can occur at the same time on December 9.

The scrub occurred during an unscheduled hold in the countdown, 5 minutes before the launch was to have occurred.

The STS-116 mission is a flight to the International Space Station, to install a new truss segment, and deploy 4 nanosats. It will also perform a crew change. The mission duration is 12 days.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion, Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of Masterpiece Theatre, was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecutors.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

Habertürk media sparks outrage over woman’s murder photo in Turkey

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

A photo of a naked and bloodstained murdered woman was shown on the front page of Turkey’s Habertürk Daily print edition last Friday, causing a social and media uproar.

The article was titled “The last point of violence against women”, and whilst there are daily reports of abuse and ‘honour-killings’, Habertürk has been the first to show a photo so graphic and uncensored. The photograph clearly shows the woman’s identity and the kitchen knife used to kill her that was still planted in her back.

I would have used that image even if it was my own mother

Habertürk has been highly criticized by social media users, readers, celebrities, woman organizations, professional press organisations and even its own staff members, with some claiming violation of journalism ethics rules. Habertürk’s own staff columnist Balcicek Ilter said, “the photo of the violated woman on my newspaper’s front page is violence itself.” Habertürk reported her husband, 45, murdered the woman, 38, in Manisa. A mother of two children, they separated after he was abusive towards her, the paper said.

At a time where campaigns are targeting the issue of violence against Turkish women, Habertürk‘s editor-in-chief, Fatih Altayl?, believes this photo counters reduced sensitivity to violence amongst the public. “I would have used that image even if it was my own mother,” he said. Habertürk firmly believes they made the correct choice in publishing the photograph even when asked by woman’s advocacy groups to apologise. “We demand the resignation of the writer of this news and the person who approved it. We call for journalism in print and on TV that stands for the right perspective,” said Canan Güllü from the Turkish Federation of Women Associations (TKDF).

the photo of the violated woman on my newspaper’s front page is violence itself

The Press Council convened Sunday to find a solution to this matter and its Secretary General, Dr. Hasan Sinar states that Habertürk has “ignored the Press Council and the Professional Press Principles” since mid 2009.

While this article has caught a lot of negative attention, there are supporters of Habertürk’s choice in using the photo. Serpil Sancar, head of Ankara University’s Women’s Issues Center agrees stating, “This photograph illustrates the violence women have to face. I don’t think showing the truth is bad. Seeing blood sets the conscience in motion.”

Since talking with Brussels over European Union membership in 2005, Turkey pledged to strengthen human rights and the protection of women. Earlier this year Human Rights Watch reported “Turkey’s flawed family violence protection system leaves women and girls across the country unprotected against domestic abuse.” The rate of female murders has increased 1,400% since 2004.

The Council of Europe’s commissioner for human rights, Thomas Hammarberg, is scheduled to be in Turkey currently. A report by Hammarberg earlier this year noted improvements in press freedom, but nonetheless claimed “There is a need for immediate measures to defend these rights [freedom of expression and the media] and support an environment of tolerance to accommodate opposing views.”

What Is The Meaning Of Life Why Are We Here?

By Robert A. Meyer

Many people have pondered the question: What is the meaning of lifewhy are we here? After much reflection, most conclude that this question is unanswerable. Tragically, some decide that life has little or no meaning. A fortunate few arrive at a place where they say “Yes! I understand. My life does have meaning.” They realize that the answer isn’t something outside of who they are. The answer is in the nature of their existence.

Rational Selfishness versus Altruism

An individual must live for the sake of his own existence. Altruists deny this fundamental truth. They claim it is selfish and mean to be concerned with one’s self-interest. They advocate sacrificing for others. Unfortunately, many unconditionally accept this faulty proposition. They are oblivious to the fact that this belief is illogical.

Is it really better to give than receive? Most would say yes. What they don’t understand is that somebody has to be on the receiving end. Using the “logic” of an altruist the person receiving would have to turn around and give what he received to another. They would pass around the object or value in question like a hot potato. After eons it would arrive back at its starting point. So the saying “It is better to give than receive” is an empty slogan with no basis in reality.

A rationally selfish individual trades value for value. He lives for his own sake. He helps another satisfy their most urgent desires when he treats them as a trader not as someone he has to give something toor take something from. An altruist expects people to live for otherssometimes the altruist himself. He demands that people give their lives away. No wonder so many people find little or no satisfaction in their existence. Since they are sacrificing values without receiving any in return their lives become meaningless.

The rationally selfish individual finds meaning in his existence because he is obtaining valuesand that includes spiritual values. He would never purposely sacrifice a higher value for a lower value. Since others benefit when involved in a relationship with him everyone gains values (whether they realize it or not). No wonder the rationally selfish person discovers his life is worthwhile. It is an experience filled with pleasure and ecstasy.

The Pain and Suffering of Government Interventionism

Our present economic system of government interventionism is the result of the faulty belief system of altruism put into action. All government intervention benefits one person or one group at the expense of others.

Some people are intelligent enough not to purposely sacrifice a higher value for a lower value. Because of this, altruists turn to the violent compulsion and coercion of the government to force individuals to sacrifice their life, liberty and property. Government expropriates a person’s hard-earned money through taxation, inflation and onerous regulations. The slogan “It is better to give than receive” is amended to read “Since it is better to give than receiveyou do it voluntarily or we will take it from you.” Theft has been legalized.

A society based on the predatory anti-life philosophy of altruism destroys the life, liberty and property of its people. It forces individuals to sacrifice their highest values. Is it any wonder that many come to believe that life has no meaning? Especially since they are brainwashed into accepting that they exist only to be sacrificial fodder for others needs and desires. These victims end up languishing in their pain and suffering.

The Joys of Libertarianism

The rationally selfish individual believes in trading value for value. He doesn’t expect anyone to sacrifice his or her life for him. And he certainly wouldn’t sacrifice his highest values and life to another. His life is his highest value.

He believes in the sanctity of life, liberty and property. Because of this he supports the only system that corresponds to the needs of other rationally selfish individuals unhampered capitalism. He knows that no man has the right to exist at the expense of another. He considers altruism and all social systems derived from itsuch as communism, socialism and government interventionismas pure evil.

He enjoys the pleasures and ecstasies life has to offer. He is whole and healthy in body, mind and spirit. He lives The Libertarian Way.

Why Are We Here?

We are here to exist for our own sake. Libertarians are rationally selfish individuals who know that life is worthwhile.

About the Author: Robert A. Meyer has been investigating and studying economics, philosophy, psychology and metaphysics for 30 years. He realizes there are basic principles of Human Action that will help you become successful. His knowledge that life is to be lived on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level allowed him to discover “The Libertarian Way.” He experiences its many pleasures and ecstasies on a daily basis.

Appalachia Mountains coal company plays State politics

Tuesday, August 2, 2005

Massey Energy Co., the fourth largest coal producer in the U.S., filed a federal lawsuit against the Governor of West Virginia, Joe Manchin.

Massey’s CEO Don Blankenship alleged that Gov. Manchin acted in retaliation against the company’s coal mining operations because the company spent $650,000 in an advertising campaign to defeat the governor sponsored pension bond proposal. The $5.5 billion bond proposal, intended to shore up the state’s sagging pension plan, was defeated in a special election held in June.

The Massey lawsuit, filed last Tuesday on July 26 in the U.S. District Court in the W.V. southern district, was referred to by Gov. Manchin as having less to do with the bond proposal than with the newly increased state “severance tax” on coal. Nearly 40 million tons of coal production will be subject to the 56-cent tax.

According to Blankenship, that tax amounts to $22.4 million in additional costs for the company, but he denied the increase has anything to do with the lawsuit.

The company reported profits that almost tripled during the second quarter compared to a year ago. Of the company’s rosy earnings picture, Blankenship urged states to “show some frugality” by not placing tax burdens on coal to solve state budget shortfalls. He said his company is “playing a role” because there was no need for the bond sale and the state can afford to make payments into the pension system.

Blankenship acknowledged during a conference call the now-rescinded June 30 permit by the W.V. Department of Environment Protection (DEP). At issue was the department’s permit for mining operations near the Marsh Fork Elementary School, in Sundial, W.V. The school rests at the base of a mountain selected by Massey for “Mountain Top Removal” (MTR) mining techniques. Along with the mining equipment, a coal preparation plant and a sludge pond were established on the mountain. Protest groups, mainly the Coal River Mountain Watch and Mountain Justice Summer, presented a list of demands to Massey officials that included shutting down the preparation plant, ceasing all MTR mining above the Marsh Fork Elementary School, and abandoning plans for a second coal silo near the school. They also ask that the Marsh Fork school be cleaned up or relocated. The state permit for a second coal storage silo was rescinded by the DEP the same day Massey filed the Manchin lawsuit.

Gov. Manchin in June said that Blankenship could expect tougher state scrutiny of his business affairs since the Massey media campaign against the pension bond proposal. “I think that is justified now, since Don has jumped in there with his personal wealth trying to direct public policy,” he said at an appearance at an American Electric Power event in Putnam County.
