Singapore police arrest death penalty book author

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Singapore police arrested British author and journalist Alan Shadrake one day after the launch of his book about the country’s use of the death penalty.

Shadrake, 75, was arrested on Sunday morning at a hotel in Singapore and taken into custody by police on charges of criminal defamation, in response to a complaint lodged by the city-state’s Media Development Authority (MDA) over the contents of his new book, Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock. Separately, the Attorney-General served Shadrake with an application for an order of committal for contempt of court, accusing him of “cast[ing] doubt on the impartiality, integrity, and independence” of Singapore’s courts through his book.

Shadrake’s latest book discusses alleged “double standards” in the country’s application of the death penalty, and contains interviews with local human rights activists, lawyers, and former police officers, including retired Changi Prison executioner Darshan Singh; Singh later claimed that he had been “tricked” into the interview. In earlier media comments, Shadrake stated that he expected “trouble” but no concrete action from authorities over his book, lest they draw even more attention to its claims. Retailers took his book off shelves after inquiries by the MDA; a spokesman for the MDA stated that the book was not banned, but suggested that booksellers “seek legal advice to ensure that the books they sell do not contravene Singapore laws”.

Shadrake has written for a variety of newspapers, including The Daily Telegraph of London as well as the New Straits Times of neighbouring Malaysia. His previous book, The Yellow Pimpernels, told the tale of various attempts to escape from East Germany over the Berlin Wall. If convicted, he faces a two-year imprisonment and a fine.

Home: Marketing Your House To Homebuyers

When you want to sell your house, its essential that you pay special attention on marketing your house to homebuyers. After all, marketing is the way to get people noticing that youre trying to sell a house! But for agents, its an entirely different deal. On each call generated by a marketing of your house, there is an opportunity for the selling agent to take them as clients. The more calls your house generates, the bigger possibility of the buyers agent to get clients.Although the reason is different, marketing your house to homebuyers will always be a big deal for all aspects of the sellers side. You might want to confirm that the agent handling your house advertisement runs ads in magazines and local newspapers for that matter. Prepare the advertisements with well consideration. Pick out a good picture of your house. List the features homebuyers would look for. Also check that your advertisements go to the local Multiple Listing Service, as this is considered the most powerful marketing tool you can find.If you feel like the agents are not doing a good enough job, put some efforts in marketing your house yourself. Create fliers and postcards announcing your home selling and spread it in the neighborhood. Your neighbors may not want to buy your house, but theres a chance they know of a homebuyer. And because they already know the environment, theyll make perfect salesmen for your house! Word of mouth, as always, is the most effective step you can take at the cheapest price.Following the announcements, you might want to set up an open house that doubles as home showings. The bad thing about this is that most visitors of an open house are rarely homebuyers some of them just followed the Open House sign and went in for no reason. But its still a good extent for your word of mouth campaign. It might even create interests from local real estate agents to list your house. But try not to organize an open house as an alternative when your house has been in the market for some time. Most of your neighbors would already know that youre marketing your house to homebuyers and the open house would attract even less visitors.Whether its with an agent or by yourself, you would always want to be involved in marketing your house to homebuyers. In home selling you will be competing with thousands of other houses, and whos better to flaunt the features to homebuyers than the one whos been living in it?

Residents of Leeds, England neighbourhood plagued with crime ask council for help

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Residents of a Leeds, England neighbourhood have requested help from a council because their neighbourhood is plagued by crime, overcrowding, and community tensions.

Leeds City Council received a request for help from residents of Hyde Park, who said they were worried about the increasing level of anti-social behavior and worsening community relations. A report will be unveiled on Wednesday by a council delegation, highlighting the problems in the area. “The people living in Hyde Park come from widely different population groups… these groups have very different customs, needs and living styles and this can provoke high levels of tension in the area,” the delegation said.

The council claims that because of the 28 per cent ethnic minority population and the 40,000 students living in the neighbourhood, there are tensions between residents. They added, however, that they are actively encouraging people to work together, citing a multi-faith forum, a cricket competition and activities which bring old and young together.

The report says that the council are trying to build relationships between Muslims and police, something which they said is “particularly important after the area’s connection to the London bombings on 7th July 2005.” A local newspaper reported that “the Shebab project introduces young Muslims to role models from sport and culture and also runs scholars’ talks to counter extremist ideologies.”

Crime has increased by 7% in the past year in Hyde Park, and residents noted that anti-social behaviour was getting worse. The council said that an anti-burglary task force had helped to reduce the number of thefts from homes. Residents complained that there was a lack of pride in the area, and at the end of the academic year in the summer, large piles of rubbish were left in streets, yards and alleyways. The report adds that the council operates a recycling scheme aimed towards teenagers, and that rubbish collections have increased.

[We are] slightly frustrated with certain communication issues that we’ve had with the council

The Guardian reported on Wednesday that campaigners are attempting to “take control of a derelict school building and transform it into a community hub are appealing for sponsors and partners in a bid to turn their dreams into reality.” They say that the unused building, owned by the council, could be used for meetings and events. A volunteer group of residents have been working on a business plan, and have gained support from local businesses to create “a vision of an open, accessible and valuable resource for all.”

A member of the commitee, however, said he was “frustrated” with the council’s attitude towards the plans. “The RPCC is slightly frustrated with certain communication issues that we’ve had with the council, but we’re working with them and hoping to gain further assistance going forward,” he said. “It’s a shame that certain setbacks could have been avoided.”

The deputation added that “a major factor in Hyde Park’s suffering is its high level of population density”, which they conceded is something they are unable to change. The council responded to complaints that streets are “cheap and unhealthy takeaways, letting agents and boarded-up shop fronts,” by saying that Hyde Park Corner and Headingley are, according to the Yorkshire Post, “thriving shopping areas and work had taken place to ensure a good mix of outlets.”

The report concludes: “The council acknowledges that because of the very particular circumstances which exist in the neighbourhood, Hyde Park faces difficult challenges which affect the quality of life of residents and that ‘normal’ service levels may not be sufficient to tackle some of these. The council will do more to enable local people to influence how services work and how local problems are tackled. Local community and voluntary groups will be invited to play an active role.”

The Difference Between Panic Disorder And Social Anxiety

By Chad Henners

Many people have dealt with a variety of different problems associated with anxiety and panic, but often times there is confusion as to which is associated with social problems and what is a deeper issue. Finding out what the problems are rooted in is the key. Finding the issues that are not panic disorder can be hard, especially since so many symptoms overlap. Overlapping symptoms are really rough to understand but it s important to follow the right path and course of action. Consider the following tips to figuring out what is the right way to move forward.

The first thing that you ll need to understand about social anxiety is that there s a complete social relevance that is a focal point. Social aspects are hard on people, and some freeze up when pushed into the public eye. For instance, if you are afraid of public speaking, and you start to feel shortness of breath, rapid heart rate and more, you ll feel complete disconnect and that will be often times tied to social anxieties and not simply panic. The panic can be overwhelming at first, but the social aspect of failure in front of a wide audience can be harder to deal with than a disorder.

Panic attacks can end up hitting hard aside from social aspects of anxieties of other types. For instance, some people deal with pressure at home away from the spotlight and can t really shake it. Some even feel it in their sleep, facing the giant of nocturnal terror leading to insomnia and other problems. These are not social aspects of any disorder, but rather are solitary issues that require special attention.

There are a lot of issues that require deep attention to move ahead properly. It s not something that is as easy as taking a pill, but rather a lot of work to move forward. The work is not something that is impossible to do, nor is it something that is coupled with a lot of side effects, but rather something that requires specific routines to help cajole the right results. Social anxiety has a pressure that is quite difficult to understand, especially since each individual person has to get special attention.

The main difference between both options is simple, one deals with a social problem while the other is much deeper within the mind. Socializations and anxieties have been tied together in many different ways, and if you look into them deeper, you ll realize that it s the #1 cause of stress for some people. The fear of falling, or dying is paled in comparison to the fear of speaking in front of an audience. Public speaking, and social aspects of life trigger a certain fear that is not easy to overcome which is the main difference between panic disorders and social anxieties.

The ultimate thing to remember is simple; there is hope for a brighter future. You can overcome either malady with grace and honor, and it s not always found with medications. Finding resources to help can seem daunting, but there is a great deal of opportunity out there, it s just a matter of knowing how to decipher the two maladies correctly.

U.S. Senate approves revised bailout package after controversial additions

Saturday, October 4, 2008

The U.S. Senate passed a revised bailout bill designed to help the struggling U.S. financial economy, which has measures nearly identical to the bill rejected by the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday.

“Senate Democrats and Republicans believe it is essential that we work quickly on this important legislation to restore confidence to our financial system and strengthen the economy,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The new revisions include raising the FDIC insurance cap to $250,000, a move designed to please progressives. However, the $110 billion in tax breaks, earmarks and what has been called pork barrel spending is not offset by any increases in revenues and has added opposition to the bill from some Representatives in the House.

Earmarks added into the bailout bill included $192 million in tax rebates for the Virgin Islands rum industry, $148 million in tax cuts for the wool industry, $100 million tax cuts to the auto racing industry, and $48 million in Hollywood tax incentives.

Vice President of Taxpayers for Common Sense, Steve Ellis, offered his explanation for the pork and earmarks added in. “People who support some of these provisions will forget about the $700 billion and concerns they may have on that, and say, ‘If you give me a few million in tax breaks for my constituents, I’ll go along'”.

The tactic seems to have worked, however, managing to flip enough votes to pass the bill.

“The inclusion of parity, tax extenders and the FDIC increases has caused me to reconsider my position,” said Representative Jim Ramstad (R Minnesota), who voted against the previous bill on Monday. “All three additions have greatly improved the bill.”

But Representative Marcy Kaptur (D Ohio) was not changing her no vote. “I will not support this legislation because it’s the wrong medicine,” she said.

The Senate took H.R.1424, a bill originating in the House concerning “equity in the provision of mental health and substance-related disorder benefits under group health plans, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment,” and extended it with the bailout provisions.

H.R.1424 was introduced on March 9, 2007, by Rep. Patrick Kennedy (RI-1) and had the support of First Lady Rosalind Carter. It is noted on the Congressional Website that “On 10/1/2008, the Senate passed H.R.1424 as the vehicle for the economic rescue legislation. In the EAS version of the bill (Engrossed Amendment as Agreed to by the Senate), Division A (pp.1-110) is referred to as the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008; Division B (pp. 110-255) is referred to as the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008; and Division C (pp. 255-441) is referred to as the Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008.” It was not treated as an appropriations bill in the House.

There were two votes in the Senate. The first was to amend H.R.1424, which required 3/5 to be accepted, which it was. The second was a vote on the bill. Passage of the Bill required only a 1/2 majority. It was passed with 74 yeas and 25 nays. Senator Kennedy did not vote.

How To Find Local Electricians In My Area When Youve Recently Moved

Every homeowner may have their own specific needs depending on the size of their family and whether they’ve moved into an apartment or home. However, regardless of type of home or size of family, every homeowner will need to find local plumbers and local electricians in my area. You may have had an excellent plumber or electrician in your old home. However, it’s impractical to think that they can help you in your new home, especially if you’ve moved to another state or even across the same state. What you need is to find local electricians near me. Why it’s so important to find local electricians near me If you’ve moved into a ready house, it would already have the wiring installed so you don’t really need to call an electrical installation company. The only time you will need to call an electrician is when you have an electrical emergency. If and when this happens, the last thing you want is to wait hours or even days for help to arrive. You need to get the problem sorted out as soon as possible so you can get back to your daily routine. The only way to do this is by looking for local electricians in my area. Of course, if you’ve recently moved, you may not have names ready. The tips below will help you find the best local electricians who can you can rely on for help in an emergency. The key is to look for an electrician before you actually need one. That way you are not scrambling in the dark if the power goes off in the middle of the night. How to find the best local electricians in my area The best place to start your search is online. Enter your location in the area maps and then do a search for ‘local electricians near me’. You’ll get hundreds if not thousands of results so your next step is to narrow down that list. You can do this by browsing through the different electrician’s websites and see what services they offer. Most important you want to make sure that they offer 24 hour emergency services. If you are looking for some specific information that’s not listed on the site, look for the contact details and call the company so you can ask them directly. This will also allow you to evaluate their customer service. When you call the company ask if they offer 24 hour call outs and if they charge any call out fee. This is very important. You don’t want to get a shock at this additional charge after they’ve done the work. Another question you should ask is how long they will take to reach your home if you have an electrical emergency. And of course, most important of all, ask them whether or not the electricians they send to your house are licensed. You absolutely should not allow unlicensed workers to carry out any repairs in your home. One electrical company you should check out is Grip Electric. With branches around London, they will send an electrician to your house within 30 minutes. They are available 24 hours and do not charge any call out fees. All of their electricians are city and guilds qualified.
