Jamaica: Violence kills at least 30

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Authorities in Jamaica say that gunfights in the capital Kingston have left at least 30 people dead, as hundreds of troops and police search for an alleged drug kingpin wanted by the US. At least 25 people were injured as well.

The violence has been triggered by the Jamaican government’s efforts to extradite Christopher “Dudus” Coke, the alleged leader of the “Shower Posse” group. Armed security forces stormed the Tivoli Gardens slum of western Kingston on Monday in an effort to locate Coke, who has not been found. Last week, Coke’s supporters barricaded the area in an attempt to thwart his arrest.

The trouble has forced the closure of schools and businesses across the capital, and the government has appealed for blood donations for the wounded. A state of emergency is in effect for parts of Kingston.

The US has issued a travel alert to warn citizens against visiting the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding has promised “strong and decisive” action to restore order.

2008 Leisure Taiwan launched in Taipei World Trade Center

Saturday, July 19, 2008

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.

How To Get Her Back A Girl’s Honest Perspective}

Submitted by: Anthony Malibu

Winning back an ex girlfriend is entirely possible, but it’s a job made much easier if you look at things from her own perspective. Seeing things through your her eyes – instead of just your own – is essential to getting back together with your ex. The following guide will show you what she’s thinking and feeling just after she breaks up with you.

One of the first mistakes guys make after being dumped by a girlfriend is to look at the situation narrowmindedly. No one does this on purpose, but the thoughts, feelings, and actions you take just after losing your girlfriend are almost purely self-serving. You’re doing what YOU want to do, not what your ex wants. Moreover, you’re thinking that everything you’re about to do will get your ex to come back to you, when it reality it’s only going to push her further away.

Understanding the female psyche right after a break up is crucial to seeing things clearly. The flowers you send, the cards you buy, and the long letters professing love for your ex… these are all unwanted gestures right from the start. Why? Doesn’t any girlfriend desire these things? Yes, but not right now. Right after ending your relationship, your ex will want to avoid you. She’s feeling strange and awkward about everything, and being around you will make it worse. And the more you push? The more awkward it gets. And some guys push until the girl runs screaming in the other direction… and funniest of all, can’t figure out why.

When your girlfriend ends your relationship, it’s not always final. People get back together each day. It could be that she’s frustrated or upset at something you specifically did, or it could be the culmination of a lot of different problems. Most likely, they’ve been around for a while… so you’re not going to fix them overnight. The longer you give your ex to think about them, and the more space you give her in which to consider it, the better off you’ll be in terms of winning her back.

It’s a fact: guys like to fix things. Quickly, if possible. But in your ex-girlfriend’s eyes, your relationship isn’t a quick or easy fix. She wants you to realize what’s wrong before you come back to her (or she comes back to you). Trying to resolve your issues is admirable, but it’s also too little too late. These problems would’ve been better addressed while you were dating, and she’s taken the drastic measure of breaking up with you to get you to realize them. Your ex isn’t looking for you to put a patch over the holes in your relationship, and in some cases she might actually be looking to punish you for a specific time period for what she perceives as wrong.

Obviously you can’t look at things from within your girlfriend’s mind, and she’s not going to tell you everything that she’s feeling. This is where you need to stop and clear your own head by taking some time away. Dropping out of sight after your ex dumps you is one of the biggest steps you can take toward getting her back. If you’re strong enough to shut off your phone and flip off your computer, you’ll immediately earn her respect and curiosity. After she cools off she’ll begin to look around for you. Not seeing or hearing from you will make her wonder where you went. This process is necessary to getting your ex miss you, which is instrumental in your ultimate goal: making her want you back.

Any girl who breaks up with a guy thinks the same thing: did he really love me? Seeing a guy chase after you is a good indication that you’re something to be desired. It’s an ego boost for your ex girlfriend, and it’ll also allow her to extend the break up for as long as she thinks you’re hanging around. So now imagine the opposite scenario: a girl breaking up with a guy who just disappears. Such a girl wouldn’t know whether or not she was missed, because she has no clue what her ex is doing. Instead of knowing she was needed, she wonders if maybe she wasn’t needed at all. In fact, maybe she needed her boyfriend more than he ever needed her. This is what gets a girl to question – and possibly even reverse – her decision break up.

By doing the polar opposite of what she expects, you’re keeping your ex interested in you. By remaining strong instead of weak, independent instead of desperate, you’re giving off positive, confident vibes. These are a hell of a lot more attractive to your girlfriend than anything else you could do that might include begging, pleading, and trying to worm your way back into her heart. If your ex doesn’t respect you, she won’t date you again. You’ll fall into the category of “just a friend” or she’ll detach herself from you completely and start dating someone else.

Getting back together with your ex girlfriend demands that you be proactive with everything you do. The faster you begin on these things, the more you’ll increase the chance for a successful reunion. From there, you’ll be able to rebuild a new relationship on a strong new foundation. And since your ex is the one who wants you back, everything will seem like her own idea. This is huge when it comes to the staying power of your new romance. Anything built together will be stronger than if you built it yourself.

New Jersey real estate investor charged with $2 million theft

Friday, March 20, 2009

The owner of a New Jersey real estate investment firm has been charged with using $2 million of his company’s money for construction at his home and other projects not related to work.

Gary Klein, owner of the Asbury Park-based REI Group Inc., surrendered himself to police after a Monmouth County grand jury indicted him on one count of theft by deception charges.

The charges were the result of a three-year investigation into his practices. Klein, 45, of Colts Neck Township, faces up to 10 years in state prison if convicted. Klein was released Friday after posting $75,000 bail.

Klein attracted clients by telling them he would invest their money in projects that would result in returns of 12 and 85 percent. Prosecutors said the actions mirrored those of a Ponzi scheme.

Robert Weir, Klein’s attorney, said the operation was not a Ponzi scheme, but legitimate business investments that went bad as the economy declined. Weir also said Klein hired a receiver to try and return the investors’ money once the investments started to go sour.

“It’s a shame that a business that experienced a turn in the real estate market is now being treated as a criminal problem. That was not Mr. Klein’s intent,” Weir said to The Star-Ledger.

Weir said the investments were used for building rehabilitation projects in Asbury Park and the construction of Florida condominium complexes, but authorities said Klein used the money to repay earlier investors who were cashing out, as well to help build his own home.

China ends retaliation on social media sites

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

China lifted its three-day block on 16 of the country’s Twitter-like services, including the two largest, which are Sina’s and Tencent’s microblogging sites.

China said it carried out the ban on the sites’ commenting function because microbloggers were using the sites to spread conspiracy theories and rumors about the disappearance of politican Bo Xilai on March 15. Bo was once mayor of Dalia, the party chief of Chongqing, and thought to be a likely candidate for the China’s elite Politburo Standing Committee. Bo vanished a short time after his former chief of police, Wang Lijun, had also been reported missing after he attempted to seek asylum in the United States through a consulate. The government said Wang had left due to stress. Bo’s disappearance came to light when the microbloggers posted the news. China retaliated for what it called illegal chatter about Bo’s disappearances and claims of military operations, weapons fire, and even a purported coup.

Sina and Tencent both referred to the government’s action in statements as a “cleaning up” period. As many as 700 million subscribers were unable to comment on posts during the period of the block, although they were still able to write new messages and forward messages to others. The talk persisted through those two functions, especially the forwarding of messages. The block was not the only fallout from the incident as six people were taken into custody for fabrication and others were brought in for questioning.

Factors Affecting Laser Hair Removal

By Doug Smith

It would be surprising if you haven’t considered trying laser hair removal by now. Almost everyone has some form of unwanted body hair. Many hail it as a magical hair removal method. The doctor merely waves his magic laser wand over the unwanted hair and it is gone forever. This is wishful thinking. There is a great deal of science involved in laser hair removal, and many factors can affect the quality of the treatment.

Beam Strength

It is obvious that the strength of the laser beam affects the quality of the laser hair removal session. Just as it is more effective to extinguish a flame with the water pressure of a fire hose than with a garden hose, the “light pressure” of a laser can make the difference between excellent results and no results at all. The doctor must control the beam strength carefully, such as through the time of exposure.

Wavelength

Many different laser wavelengths have been tried for laser hair removal. The wavelength is a measure of the distance between adjacent waves of the laser light. Lasers are characterized by the material used to create the laser light, such as alexandrite, argon, and ruby. Each material generates laser light of a specific wavelength, and some wavelengths of laser light are more effective against hair than others.

Beam Width

The laser beam width is the diameter of the circle that the laser beam makes on the skin. The ideal beam width is estimated to be four times as wide as the distance that the beam must travel into the skin. for example, if the hair roots were 0.05 inches beneath the skin, the ideal beam with would be about 0.20 inches wide.

Pulsewidth

Most laser hair removal is performed by the doctor holding the laser over a specific area and turning the laser on for a specific time period. This time period is known as the pulsewidth. If the pulsewidth is too short, the hair might not be destroyed. If it is too long, the surrounding skin may be damaged. The doctor may vary the pulsewidth until he finds one that works for each specific patient.

Cooling The Skin During Treatment

One of the newer developments is the cooling of the skin during laser hair removal treatment. Skin cooling allows the doctor to use a “hotter” laser for longer periods of time without damaging the skin. Several methods of skin cooling are performed before, during, or even after the treatment.

Skin and Hair Color

The microwave oven targets the moisture in food, vibrating it up until it heats up and cooks the food. Similarly, laser hair removal targets color. Better results are obtained when there is great contrast between the skin color and the hair color. Specifically, black hair in very pale skin is the ideal laser hair removal scenario. On the other hand, blonde or white hair in that same very pale skin would be more difficult to remove, because there is little hair color for the laser to target. The darker the patient’s skin is, the more of the laser gets absorbed into the skin, and the less laser light reaches the unwanted hair.

A Science And An Art

Many scientific variables control the effectiveness of laser hair removal. However, the doctor must use professional judgment to vary these things so that each patient receives the best possible hair removal treatment.

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

International exhibit of chair art starts in Canada

Monday, November 21, 2005

The international entry mail art show SAT: An Exhibit of Chairs was put on display Friday in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Held in the Fridge Front Gallery at the Shoppers World Brampton mall, SAT is a diverse collection of artworks focusing on a generally mundane object, the chair.

Works in the show range from realism to abstract, dadaism to surrealism, post-modern to collage.

While some of the entries were submitted directly to Visual Arts Brampton, most came from a previous exhibit. Organized by Pati Bristow, No place to rest, chairs you can’t sit on ran at Shopping Trolley Gallery West and Seaman’s Library at Foothill College, both in Los Altos Hills, California, earlier in 2005. Guest curator Nicholas Moreau was unaware of the similarly themed exhibit, held so soon before. The theme for SAT was based on that of a 1987 juried art show organized by Visual Arts Brampton at the now-defunct Chinguacousy Library Gallery.

Works in Visual Arts Brampton’s showing of the exhibition are from 17 countries including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Romania, Spain, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

This is Visual Arts Brampton’s third mail art show. In 1999, Susan Williamson created The Great Canadian Mail Art Show for Artway at Bramalea City Centre; the show was so successful that the Art Gallery of Peel adopted it in 2001. The concept of a mail art show was revived in 2004 by Moreau, held at the new Artway Shoppers World. The Snail Mail World Postcard Art Show has been held annually since.

Visual Arts Brampton’s Fridge Front Gallery primarily hosts artwork by youth from its kids classes, and from schools in Brampton and Oakville. In contrast, the nearby Artway Gallery hosts artwork by professional and amateur adult artists from across Peel. VAB has successfully sought permission to create a third display space in Shoppers World, in the Zellers corridor. The space will host shows of mail art and works on paper year-round. The planned “World Art Gallery” will be the first ever permanent display space for mail art.

FBI asks Wikimedia Foundation to remove seal from websites, Wikimedia declines

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, its projects, and people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has asked the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), host of Wikinews and its sister projects, to take down its image of the FBI seal from its websites. However, the WMF declined, saying that FBI lawyers had misinterpreted the relevant federal law.

In a letter dated July 22, David C. Larson, Deputy General Counsel of the FBI demanded that the WMF remove the seal from its websites within fourteen days, claiming that “it facilitates both deliberate and unwitting violations of these restrictions by Wikipedia users.”

it facilitates both deliberate and unwitting violations of these restrictions by Wikipedia users.

Larson cited 18 U.S.C. 701, which states: “Whoever manufactures, sells, or possesses any badge, identification card, or other insignia, of the design prescribed by the head of any department or agency of the United States for use by any officer or employee thereof, or any colorable imitation thereof, or photographs, prints, or in any other manner makes or executes any engraving, photograph, print, or impression in the likeness of any such badge, identification card, or other insignia, or any colorable imitation thereof, except as authorized under regulations made pursuant to law, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.”

Larson went on to say that use of the FBI seal may be authorized only by the director of the FBI; the FBI director has not given such permission to WMF.

The WMF, represented by General Counsel Mike Godwin, responded, saying in a letter dated July 30, that Larson’s interpretation “is both idiosyncratic (made especially so by your strategic redaction of important language) and, more importantly, incorrect.”

Godwin said that “while we appreciate your desire to revise the statute to reflect your expansive vision of it, the fact is that we must work with the actual language of the statute, not the aspirational version” Larson provided. According to the relevant case law, it “was intended to protect the public against the use of a recognizable assertion of authority with intent to deceive.”

I have to believe the FBI has better things to do than this

Godwin asserted that the use of the FBI seal by the WMF and its projects do not fall under the purview of that law.

The websites of the Wikimedia Foundation are filled with user-generated text, pictures, and other materials, uploaded and curated by independent, often anonymous, volunteers, who change the websites minute by minute. The most well-known sites are the Wikipedias, encyclopedias with over 13 million articles in hundreds of languages. However, the foundation also hosts an image and media library, dictionaries, the Wikinews news websites, book websites and many other educational collaborations.

Cindy Cohn, legal director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (where Godwin was once staff counsel), said that the WMF’s constitutional right to free expression allows it to use the FBI seal. “I have to believe the FBI has better things to do than this,” she said. The reason for the FBI’s request is unknown, as the FBI seal is published on many other websites, including Encyclopedia Britannica.

Camping Out Easy Dinner Recipes And Dinner Ideas For Family Fun

By Julie Languille

Whether you have a mega-bus RV, a trailer, camper, or tent, camping is a wonderful way to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors as a family together. It really is a great exercise in family togetherness as you unplug most of life’s distractions and focus on creating shelter and food, then enjoying the outdoors together. A few easy dinners recipes and you’ll soon be gathered around a roaring fire enjoying each others’ company.

I grew up camping with my family regularly. We pulled a camping trailer and loved the convenience to set up camp quickly and carry the basics with us. I still remember nights spent playing cards together and cooking over the grill. We learned to always be ready to leave early, because my father loved to leave the night or day before we planned. He would just get excited and want to go early. Pretty cute, huh?

Now that I have a family of my own I try to make it a memory for us as well. We live in Washington state and the state parks are wonderful. Our favorite, located on the north end of Whidbey Island is Deception Pass State Park. It is lovely with some waterfront spaces, and wonderful facilities. We love to go there. Again I like to prepare in advance the dinner for our first night.

I usually start a flank steak marinating before we leave and by the time we travel, arrive, setup camp and get the fire going, the steaks is marinated and the dinner is wonderful, tender, succulent, flavorful steak. If you have time before hand, it’s great to parboil some small potatoes until they are almost done. Then at supper time, roll them in olive oil and salt and pepper and put them on skewers to grill up, deliciously, with crispy, grill marked skin. I usually plan a bagged salad to round out the meal and then go in for a grilled dessert.

Have you ever roasted bananas on the campfire? They’re delicious. Wrap them in foil sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnamon. Heat until warmed through and serve with a spoon to be eaten straight from the foil.

For a great camping breakfast, consider packing some crescent rolls and jam. Wrap the rolls around a roasting stick, leaving an opening at the top (we’ll fill that with jam later). Let each person toast their roll over the fire until golden brown outside and cooked through. Carefully take it off the stick or eat it off the stick if your brave. Fill the opening at the top with jam or jelly and eat while they’re hot.

Campfire Grilled Flank Steak

We always plan this for the first night camping. It is marinating on the way and cooks in a flash once we get the fire going.
