These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.

Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, throughout the campaign. We now interview independent Presidential candidate Jon Greenspon, a veteran and small business executive.

Motorola to launch iTunes mobile phone

Friday, April 22, 2005

Motorola has recently confirmed plans that it will launch an iTunes compatible mobile phone. The firm, which released quarterly results on Friday, revealed that the phone would be available in a few months time.

There had been speculation that the wireless communications giant would scrap the phone after an underwhelming response from US operators, however CEO Ed Zander confirmed the company’s intentions at the results presentation.

The phone, when launched, will allow users to easily download digital music from Apple’s popular iTunes music store onto their handset. The combination of mobile phone and MP3 player is a long awaited example of the much touted “technological convergence” often mentioned by the industry’s CEO’s.

Wikinews will have a reporter live at Apple’s WWDC keynote (when the software is likely to be released) on June 6 to cover the event.

Independent Financial Planners What To Look Out For

By Ryan Paulin

Independent financial planners simply represent their clients apart from a company or those who give independent investment advice. But like any other professional, a certain degree of standard, educational background, training and certification is required before one becomes qualified for the job.

What do independent financial planners do? They do a thorough study of their client’s financial status, goals and financial preferences. They map out a plan to meet a person’s financial goals. They are also mandated to disclose their fees and services to potential clients.

They are consulted in matters of insurances, retirement plans, pensions, investment, real estate, tax and other legal issues. One of the advantages of hiring an independent financial planner is that they are free from representing any conflict of interest. Most planners who are working for a company, bank, or insurance may place their own interest before your own. This makes them less dependable and ineffective.

What do you look for in an personal financial planner? He or she must be a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors of NAPFA. With this kind of affiliation, a full disclosure of their fees will be shown to you before they manage your assets or help you implement your financial goals.

Just like any other professional, ask for their academic credentials, licenses and designations. Knowing their capacity in line of their work is great information when it comes to looking for a qualified financial planner. Certain certifications and trainings required for all independent financial planners are available on the internet for your perusal and consideration. Take advantage of the information that you can derive from websites that offer listings of qualified financial planners.

When it comes to fees independent financial planners can charge by commission, fees, fee-only or a combination of both commission and fees. Study all these options and find out which one will be most effective yet affordable for you.

During the interview process, ask them the right questions like their work history, clientele, and their qualifications for the job. Independent financial planners will work harder since they are still working for a good work reputation. Also, do not forget to ask for a copy of their ADV form II which will disclose their past administrative sanctions or criminal offenses.

When entrusting your future into the hands of a financial planner, it is but right to make the necessary investigation. Listening to your intuition and finding out the work ethics of your financial planner is also crucial in matters of your financial future. It is best to deal with someone you are comfortable with. Italy win with last kick against Australia; into quarter-finals

Monday, June 26, 2006

A Francesco Totti penalty deep in added time put Italy through to the next round of the 2006 Fifa World Cup at the expense of Australia, Monday.

The Australian Socceroos had the ball more, but the more experienced Azzuri defenders created an impenetrable defence, limiting the number of Australian scoring opportunities. This was despite the Italian team shrinking to ten men after Marco Materazzi was shown a controversial straight red card in the 50th minute.

Australia looked to have gained an advantage when Marco Bresciano surged through the Italy defence and Materazzi slid in to trip him up. Though there was an Italy defender on Bresciano’s shoulder, Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo deemed that the tackle was deliberately not aimed at the ball, and considered the foul worth more than a single yellow card. It would not be the only disputed decision in the match.

Both sides had a number of good opportunities to score, but the shots were generally too close to the box to beat the goalkeepers. The best save of the game was made by Mark Schwarzer from a Luca Toni effort 20 minutes into the game.

Guus Hiddink delayed making attacking substitutions against ten-men Italy likely because he expected the game to go to extra time, and so wished to keep a fitness advantage later on in the game. Hiddink’s only substitution, John Aloisi, came on at the 80th minute, while the Italian coach Marcello Lippi had made three, including the crucial one of Totti five minutes earlier.

In the attack Totti was a straight swap for Alessandro Del Piero, a fresh pair of legs which ensured Italy were a threat on the break right until the end of the regular period of play. It was a tactic that paid dividends in the end.

The second disputed referee decision was a penalty kick was awarded to Fabio Grosso three minutes into added time (and the last minute of game time). Grosso was running towards goal from out wide having avoided Marco Bresciano before being obstructed by Lucas Neill. The central defender had fallen to the ground early and Grosso, though not tripped, was impeded and dived straight over him. Medina awarded a penalty shot as this occurred within the penalty area.

Totti, dropped from the game in favour of Del Piero, grinned slightly as he placed the ball on the spot. The ball was struck close to the upper-right corner of Schwarzer’s box, the goalie could do nothing to stop the ball. It was the last kick of the game and the Italians celebrated.

The Budweiser Man of the Match was Gianluigi Buffon of Italy.

The prize was a quarter-final match against the lowest ranked FIFA team in their half of the knock-out tree, Ukraine.

Irish CAO releases 2005 university offers to students

Monday, August 22, 2005

The Central Applications Office in Ireland has released the first round of offers for places on third level courses to over 60,000 Irish Leaving Certificate students (graduating secondary school students).

The offers are given out based on a highly competitive points system whereby students receive from

  • 100 points for an A1 to 45 points for a D3 at higher level.
  • 60 points for an A1 to 5 points for a D3 on lower level.

Points from a student’s best six subjects are added up to make his or her total points. This year 145 students achieved the maximum 600 points. Students achieveing this are generally regarded as the top students academically in the country.

Points required for courses in medicine and nursing have risen again leaving many candidates disappointed. Due to the huge popularity of medicine and the low supply of courses, points for entry into medicine are in the region of 580 points. Points for arts, engineering and commerce have fallen marginally.

While the points system is often attacked for placing too much pressure on students, it has avoided the problem of grade inflation that has occurred in the UK and USA. The Leaving Certificate exam has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 1924. It is often joked that the same questions reappear on the papers every 30 or 40 years.

46 illegal Afghan immigrants suffocate in truck in Pakistan

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Correction — Nov 1, 2013 The article below claims each passenger paid 4000 to 8000 USD. Each paid 30,000 Rupees, equivilent at the time to about US$375.

The bodies of 46 Afghan illegal immigrants who suffocated to death in a container truck Saturday near Quetta, Pakistan, returned home Tuesday.

The Edhi Foundation placed the victim’s bodies into coffins to transport them back to Chaman. Funeral prayers were said before victims left Quetta hospital. “We are taking these dead bodies to Spin Boldak and later these will be flown to Kabul by helicopter. We are thankful to Pakistan government for every help,” said Afghan consul general Daud Mohsini.

Afghan officials received the bodies from The Edhi ambulances and Pakistan police escorts at the Pak-Afghan border Bab-e-Dosti (Friendship Gate). Security was high and traffic was backed up at the border crossing. The bodies were taken to Kandahar then to Kabul before they were laid to rest in their home towns.

Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan dispatched aircraft to Pakistan to bring home the 46 victims. Poor weather grounded the planes, and the bodies were driven back across the border.

Pakistan police found a locked truck packed with approximately 111 Afghan illegal immigrants around 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Quetta on Saturday. The driver had fled the scene where 62 people were initially pronounced dead. Police said that from the strong smell emanating from the truck, the victims may have died days before they were discovered.

45 other people were found unconscious and taken directly to the hospital. At hospital two more migrants died. “The death toll is 46,” said Ghulam Dastagir, a police official.

Wazir Khan Nasir, a senior police official said, “We have been able to talk to some of the people, who were trapped in the container. They were all Afghans in the container and the container was going to Iran, When the condition of people inside the container deteriorated, the driver fled, leaving the container.”

Survivors have reported that a human smuggling racket locked 64 Kabul residents and 37 Spin Boldak residents in the truck container Friday afternoon. The truck’s air conditioning unit stopped working causing the locked passengers to cry out for help which was unheeded by the truck’s driver, and they fell unconscious. However, the loud ruckus caused by the trapped people inside did alert police and local residents to their plight.

The trip had cost each illegal immigrant US$4,000 to 8,000 for the trip. Gul Zameen, a survivor said, “We are all poor and wanted to find jobs in Quetta and Iran.”

The survivors have been charged under the Foreigners Act and some have been detained. Karzai has ordered an investigation and “demanded people avoid dangerous illegal migration and not be deceived by smugglers.” “We’ll go to Pakistan and talk to the survivors to find out what had exactly happened. The culprits will be brought to justice,” said Moheeddin Baluch head of the investigating delegation.

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is also investigating. Five suspects believed to be involved in running the human smuggling racket have been arrested.

Natural Remedies For Your Dandruff Problem}

Natural Remedies for Your Dandruff Problem

by

Louise Forrest

Dandruff is extremely annoying and it can often be really itchy too! It generally involves the shedding of dead skin cells on the scalp which usually is unnoticeable, but with dandruff the problem is noticeable.

Why Dandruff Occurs and the Natural Ways to Get Rid of It Most people believe that dandruff is due to a dry, itchy scalp. However, what you may not know is that dandruff is actually caused by too much oil on the scalp. Ordinary dandruff is often confused with Seborrheic Dermatitis which causes large flakes to appear, usually with symptoms also showing around the nose, eyebrows or ears. Also, if the dandruff is quite severe, it could be the result of Psoriasis. Generally, dandruff can occur at any age and on both sexes and it should be treated as soon as possible, otherwise it can get worse. There are plenty of medication shampoos our there to treat dandruff but not everybody finds these useful. So, more and more people are turning to natural ways to prevent their dandruff. They are cheaper, sometimes more effective, and a lot gentler on the skin so it is understandable why natural products are becoming more popular. Some natural remedies for dandruff include: AyurvedaThis kind of therapy includes massaging the scalp. It is believed that bad circulation can often be a cause of dandruff and by massaging the scalp; you are helping to restore the circulation again. It is important to use sesame oil whilst massaging the scalp and it should be done for around five to ten minutes, at least once a week. After you have massaged the oil in, you should then shower it out with your evening shower. Fenugreek is a herb which is also used in Ayurveda, and it is thought that if you mix it with honey and eat it, or you can eat it on its own daily, it will help to relive dandruff.Aromatherapy If you still want to use a dandruff shampoo, there is something else you can do to increase the chance of eliminating the problem. That includes shampooing as normal, then let the hair dry thoroughly before poring a few drops of both rosemary and lemon essential oils into the palms of your hands. Massage the oils into the scalp thoroughly and then brush the hair with a soft brush. This is known as an aromatic formula to help with dandruff. Homeopathy It is thought that various homeopathy remedies can effectively help to eliminate dandruff. If you have particularly thick dandruff which really itches and washing the hair makes the scalp really dry, then Sulphur is recommended. Sepia is also thought to help to soothe the scalp and treat moist, sensitive areas of the hair. Vitamin and Mineral Therapy Flaxseed oil is known to reduce dandruff and just a tablespoon a day on something such as potatoes, could really help you with your dandruff problem. The flaxseed oil cuts down skin oil secretions which often flake and cause the dandruff. You can buy flaxseed oil in tablet form which may be easier for some people and it is thought that one teaspoon of the oil is worth around three capsules. You can find flaxseed oil in most health food stores. Overall dandruff is treatable and it should never be left untreated. If it is left, it can really become a lot worse and in extreme cases, hair loss has been known to occur. If you are having trouble eliminating the problem and you have tried everything out on the market, it would be better to consult your doctor. They will be able to give you a proper diagnosis and suggest effective treatments for you.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Tips For Buying A New Hvac System

byadmin

An HVAC system is vital to the comfort of your home. These systems can last between ten and twenty years before needing to be replaced. By making this investment, although it may seem expensive, you will get your money’s worth over time. Here are a few things to consider before you take the plunge into finding a new HVAC system for your home.

Find an HVAC installer. This may seem obvious, but you may find an HVAC system that isn’t provided through a professional installer, which is never a good idea. Unless you are an HVAC expert yourself, never install the system yourself. To get the best results, always hire a professional.

Understanding prices. There are two prices when it comes to HVAC installation. There is the price of the unit and the price of installation. As stated above, you may find the right system outside of the professional, and this can save you money, but always be aware of prices as you get what you pay for. A professional is suggested for both the system and the installation process.

The size of the unit. You should find your HVAC unit through a professional, as the size of the system may not be the right one. There are many different sizes, and they can change depending on your home and your lifestyle. Talk to a professional about the sizing of a unit before you choose one. They will most likely ask you about your lifestyle and help you decide what size unit your home needs.

A new system provides efficiency. New HVAC systems can help to reduce your energy bills. Newer systems are more energy efficient than older systems, and you can really benefit from this. They can also help with dust control and keep allergens out of the air. You will notice a difference when your older system is changed out for a newer one.

Maintenance. So, what will the maintenance on your new system be? Most professionals suggest a yearly checkup for your system to make sure that all is well, and you are getting the most out of your system. Ask your HVAC professional about maintenance as many provide a type of maintenance contract that can help to benefit you in the long run.
