Kansas library discusses Wikipedia

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

A diverse group of approximately 25 people gathered at the Johnson County Library on Monday to participate in reference librarian Scott Vieira’s class, Wikiwhatia? Wikipedia.

Scott opened the session by sharing a disparaging quote from Robert McHenry (former editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia Britannica) comparing Wikipedia to a public restroom. He then shared a quote from Andrew Keen, author of The Cult of the Amateur, in which he stated Wikipedia is the blind leading the blind. Scott shared Wikipedia usage data from a 2007 Pew Internet study showing 36% of adults have consulted Wikipedia and that that Wikipedia receives 10,000-30,000 searches per second. Scott also pointed out that Wikipedia now has over two million articles in English alone (over nine million articles in 250 languages). So there is a discrepancy here, lots of critics and lots of use.

Scott then shared some historical information in order to provide a context for understanding Wikipedia. This included some important names and dates in the history of encyclopedias… including Pliny the Elder (23-79 C.E.) who published 37 Volumes of Natural History, and Joachim Sterck van Ringelbergh (c. 1499-1556) who first used the term encyclopedia, and then d’Alembert and Diderot who published 17 volumes of their French Encyclopedia from 1751-1765. Encyclopedia Britannica was first published in Scotland in serial format 1768-1771.

Scott also discussed more recent history, sharing a photo of Ward Cunningham –who is credited with being the inventor of wiki software. Wikipedia was founded on Jan 15, 2001 by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales. Sanger left Wikipedia in 2002 and founded Citizendium in 2007 a complementary project which now has 4500 articles.

After the historical perspective, the class moved into using Wikipedia. Everyone in the audience had used Wikipedia. The class explored the content of Wikipedia, realising there is a whole lot going on. Scott demonstrated that the article about “frogs” for example, is semi-protected. The “history of science” article was examined, including the history of changes. Discussion covered how people contribute, who contributes and edits. The group also talked about Wikipedia bots, which aid in routine tasks in a semi-automated or automated fashion.

A discussion about teachers, school media specialists and students regarding their use of Wikipedia ensued. Some teachers and school media specialists are negative about Wikipedia, but Scott’s hope is that they will use it to start a discussion about the need to evaluate and critically think about information (even when it’s from more traditionally reviewed and edited sources).

An unanswered question from an audience member was, “What was the first Wikipedia article?”

Discussion topics from Scott to audience were as follows:

 • Do you think Wikipedia is less accurate than published resources and how important is that accuracy to you?
 • How do we determine authority on a subject? How important is it that an article be written by an expert? How is Wikipedia changing our idea of what an authority is?
 • Currency – the ability to publish immediately – what are the advantages and what are the disadvantages?
 • What do we think about the content selection in Wikipedia?
 • Should Wikipedia be used by librarians?
 • What do you think about the future of Wikipedia?

Why Is Childhood Obesity Increasing?

By John Bradstreet

Almost two thirds of Americans are considered overweight or obese. Some feel that it has reached epidemic proportions here and around the world. The most concerning part of this is that 15% of children in this country are considered to be overweight. It was only a few short decades ago that this figure stood at 4%.

Diseases that were only seen in adults just a few short years ago are now being found in our children and adolescents. Obese children run a much higher chance of contracting diseases such as osteoarthritis or having heart attacks and strokes as they get older. Even the youngest members of our society are affected with 10% of preschoolers being overweight.

Childhood obesity is the leading cause of pediatric hypertension along with increasing the risk factor of a child coming down with diabetes and heart disease. But the most concerning consequence is the peer pressure and psychological pressure that can cause the child to go into periods of depression. These social and peer pressures are the main consequence of childhood obesity.

While it is true that not all obese infants grow to be obese children and not all obese children will become obese adults it is important to understand the risk factors. These can include a combination of genetics, family history, psychological and nutritional.

Family plays an important role. Statistic show that children born to parents that are obese have a higher chance of being born obese or developing the condition over time. There can be several factors that affect this. The parents could have a very sedimentary lifestyle that does not include the proper exercise, they could have poor nutritional habits or genetics could come into play.

If a child is inactive this can lead to obesity. Previous generations of children spent a lot of time outdoors and in turn were much more active. Now children spend much more time indoors on computers or in front of a television set. Becoming couch potatoes and putting on weight is not good for any child. If a child develops these bad habits at an early age it is more likely that they will become overweight and that will develop into obesity at some point. Children need physical exercise and as parents we need to make sure they are getting the proper amount each day.

Nutrition is another important factor. We live in a world of fast and processed foods that have little nutritional value. Children that eat this type of diet are not getting the proper nutrition that they need. One thing that is interesting to note is that with all we have learned over the last couple of decades in the field of nutrition the word is not getting out. One factor that may be to blame for this is information overload. People have so much information that they are confused as to how to interpret it. There are three websites that help people make sense of all this information and have issued some very helpful guidelines. They are The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), The American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Heredity could also a factor in obesity. We all know children that do not eat a nutritious diet and have little to no exercise yet they are not overweight or obese. This is the reason that researchers thought it would be interesting to look at heredity as a factor. We know that an infant born to an overweight mother generally gains more weight in the first three months of life than infants that are not. Could this imply an inborn drive to conserve energy? As more research is done in this area it will be interesting to see what conclusions are drawn.

The fact is that childhood obesity is much easier to prevent than it is going to be to deal with all of the negative health implications it will cause in the future. The very first step is in educating parents. They need to be aware of the importance of proper nutrition, exercise and breast feeding. They also need to be introduced to low fat snack foods and what proper nutrition actually entails. In cases where the problem is heredity they need to know how to teach their children self esteem and cope with any psychological problems as they arise.

Benefits Of Being Active

By Kya Grace

Do you find yourself tied down to a desk for 8 hours a day? Do you then go home and relax in front of the television for hours? Most adults today are imprisoned in a sedentary lifestyle. Later in life such individuals often suffer from a variety of health problems. If you are one such person, it is time to make an effort and embrace physically active lifestyle choices.

Adopting a physically active lifestyle which incorporates some form of exercise into one’s schedule has its advantages.

1. An active lifestyle that includes any form of exercise helps vital organs like the heart, liver and kidneys function better. It strengthens the respiratory system and the blood circulatory system. It is known to stimulate the immune system as well and this in turn enables the body to resist common ailments like cold and flu. All this adds to the feeling of health and general well being.

2. In the long run an active lifestyle reduces the risk of heart diseases and strokes. It is believed to reduce the risk of certain types of cancers as well. It helps maintain bone density and stalls the onset of diseases like osteoporosis that occur due to the loss of bone mass as a result of the aging process.

3. An active lifestyle stimulates the excretory systems and helps get rid of the toxins accumulated in the body. It leads to the release of endorphins. Endorphins promote the feeling of general well being and internal harmony. Thus it helps relieve stress, fights feelings of depression, reduces anxiety and tackles the problem of insomnia.

4. Adopting an active lifestyle helps get rid of the extra pounds accumulated over the years. It tones down body muscles and lets you get back in shape. This in turn will improve your personal body image and boost your confidence.

Once you make the decision, regardless of how busy you are, you can take simple steps to embrace an active lifestyle. Here are some things you can easily do:

1. You can take the stairs instead of always getting into the elevator.

2. Get up from the chair and walk around the office after every hour.

3. Walk to the office if your workplace is situated close to your home.

4. Walk to a restaurant for lunch and then walk back to your office.

5. See if your company management can be talked into offering gym memberships to its employees or arranging lunch time yoga classes. Or your organization might consider offering monthly Exercise Workshops/Seminars for its employees.

6. If you can make the time and can afford it, consider joining a boot camp.

A boot camp combines various types of vigorous physical exercises. These camps are conducted by trained, highly qualified physical instructors who ensure that you stick to a structured regimen. Here you can achieve your goals of getting fit or getting back into shape under professional supervision. Instructors also provide lessons on healthy eating habits. In addition, the other members in your group act as your support system and prevent you from giving up on your goal of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Today lifestyle diseases like cardiovascular problems, diabetics and hypertension have become extremely common. The choice to adopt a healthy active lifestyle can act as a precautionary measure and keep many such diseases away. Remember you are never too old to make positive changes in your life. So go ahead! Adopt an active lifestyle to experience increased vitality and enjoy a feeling of overall physical and emotional health.

Oil spill hits Australia’s Sunshine coastline

Sunday, March 15, 2009

200,000 litres of oil leaked into waters off the coast of Brisbane from the Pacific Adventurer when their fuel tanks were damaged in rough seas on Wednesday. The figure is about ten times higher than the original estimate of twenty thousand litres of oil. The devastating diesel oil spill has spread along 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Queensland coast. In addition, 31 containers with 620 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser flew overboard during the violent storm.

Questions are being asked why the Hong Kong cargo ship was out in seas with nine meter waves caused by Cyclone Hamish, a Category 5 tropical cyclone, as well as why the fertiliser containers were not properly secured. One of the overboard containers ruptured the hull of the Pacific Adventurer, causing between 30 to 100 tonnes of oil to spew from the severely damaged ship.

If the ammonium nitrate mixes with the heavy oil, an explosion could occur. None of the containers have been recovered. Some of these may float, but it is believed that they may have sunk which then may cause algal blooms.

Disaster zones have been declared at Bribie and Moreton Islands, and along the Sunshine coast.

The vessel’s owner, Swire Shipping, reported that a second leak began on Friday, when the ship began listing after docking at Hamilton for repairs. “As full soundings of the vessel’s tanks were being taken at the port to determine how much oil had leaked from the vessel, a small quantity of fuel oil escaped from the Pacific Adventurer,” it stated. The ship was brought upright, and a recovery vessel was used to suck up the oil from the water. The leak produced a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River. Booms were placed around this oil spill so that a skimmer could clean up the second spill.

Swire Shipping could face clean up costs of AU$100,000 a day as well as fines up to AU$1.5million (US$977,000; £703,000) if found guilty of environmental breaches or negligence.

Sunshine Coast beaches are slowly starting to be reopened. The beach of Mooloolaba was still closed following reports of burning sensations from swimmers. 12 beaches remain closed; however, 13 have been reopened.

Over 300 state government and council workers are using buckets, rakes and spades in the clean up effort. Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbott says the majority will be gone by Sunday afternoon. The full environmental impact on wildlife is not yet known. One turtle and seven pelicans have been found covered in oil.

There are concerns that the drinking water of Moreton Island is at risk, as the island uses water from the underground water table near the oil spill site.

“Every bucketload of contaminated sand has to be removed from the island by barge, and each bucketload from a front-end loader weighs about one tonne. It’s just an impossible task,” said Mr Trevor Hassard of the Tangalooma Dolphin Education Centre.

The commercial fishing industry has suffered from the incident. Trawlers won’t resume operations until Sunday evening, and any catches will be tested for human consumption.

Excessive Sweat Why Does Hyperhidrosis Occur?

Excessive Sweat – Why Does Hyperhidrosis Occur? By Michael Rad

The body needs sweat in order to cool down when the temperatures become too high. In nature, we see many creatures using different methods to keep a constant body temperature – sweating is our way of doing it. Unfortunately, some people experience excessive sweat, a condition known as hyperhidrosis, in which the sweat levels are higher than necessary. The condition occurs because of the overactive sympathetic nervous system. Hyperhidrosis causes

The central command center for sweat related processes is the hypothalamus. The brain sends information to the sweat nerves which then pass it along to the sweat glands. When shis system gets overactive, the sweat glends produce larger amounts of sweat, resulting in the condition known as hyperhidrosis. Different stimuli can contribute to this process. The most common include nervousness, outside pressure, anxiety, stress.

Social interactions may also trigger excessive sweat, because they are the environtments when all of the above mentioned factors become active. When a person suffering from hyperhidrosis is engaged in social interactions the strength of the outside stimuli increases, making that person more susceptible to sweat extensively.

Antiperspirants are useful for treating milder cases of hyperhidrosis, as they can diminsih the negative effects of excessive sweating. By targeting specific sweat glands, antiperspirants significantly reduce the sweat production and increase the dryness of the skin in the areas where they are applied. Various products come in different forms, such as deodoratns and medication. Deodorants are the most widespread form of antiperspirant, as they are easy to use and producce very little or no discomfort. Deodorants are mostly used to treat excessive underarm sweating. Treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis

One of the most effective chemical compounds used for hyperhidrosis treatment is Aluminum Chloride. Used in higher concentrations, Aluminum Chloride has a faster impact on the sweat glands, reducing their excessive production. One of the antiperspirants that use Aluminum Chloride successfully is Drysol, a good choice for people suffering from mild forms of axillary hyperhidrosis. Drysol does reduce the amount of sweat generated by the underarms, but it may also cause skin iritations if used excessively. Applying Drysol works best at night time, when the sweat glands show a reduced activity, and long term results may show some improvement of excessive sweating of the armpits.

Ruling forbids RadioShack brand in Canada

Friday, March 25, 2005

A U.S. District Court in Tarrant County, Texas, issued a summary judgment Thursday against Circuit City’s InterTAN Inc., requiring all 950 RadioShack stores in Canada to stop using the RadioShack brand in store signs, packaging, products and advertising after June 30.

RadioShack’s Canadian operations were spun off in 1986 to a new corporation, InterTAN Canada, which was purchased in 2004 by RadioShack’s major U.S. competitor, Circuit City. Shortly thereafter, RadioShack sued InterTAN, alleging it had violated the terms of their licensing agreement and seeking the right to terminate the contract early.

In a statement released following the judge’s ruling, RadioShack’s general counsel, Mark Hill, claimed: “The most important thing to us was to protect our brand position in Canada.”

Circuit City chairman and chief executive officer, W. Alan McCollough responded today in a press release seeking an appeal: “We respectfully believe the court has erred in the partial ruling entered yesterday and we will use every means of relief possible to exercise our rights under the agreements, including all appeal rights. The Company believes the positions taken by InterTAN are correct and believe InterTAN will ultimately prevail in the legal proceedings.”

Israeli Health minister Ya’akov Litzman resigns in protest after Jews made to work on Jewish rest day

Wednesday, November 29, 2017

On Sunday, Israeli health minister Ya’akov Litzman officially resigned, submitting his resignation letter after Jewish workers were made to work on Shabbat — the Jewish holy rest day, from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday — for installation of a signalling system on rail tracks in the Negev on Saturday. Shortly after Welfare Minister Haim Katz announced on Friday his intentions to deploy Jewish workers on Shabbat for the railway work, Litzman, who belongs to the orthodox United Torah Judaism party, informed Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu he would vacate his post on Sunday if Shabbat was sanctioned by the ministers.

Addressing the Israeli citizens in a video statement, the health minister said, “I cannot continue to bear ministerial responsibility as a minister of Israel while there is state-sanctioned public desecration of Shabbat, in contravention of the sacred values of the Jewish people, the status quo and the coalition agreement”. Both welfare minister Haim Katz and transportation minister Yisrael Katz had expressed potential threat to passengers if the railway work was postponed.

Haim Katz said he had considered the religious beliefs and public safety before making this call. On Friday, he said, “after thorough examination, I authorised only essential work to ensure the safety of rail traffic, and if it were not carried out it could endanger lives […] This decision reflects full consideration for the feelings of the religious public, on the one hand, and maintaining the routine of the train passengers on Sunday.”

The minister also said delaying this work and doing it on a working day would cause inconvenience to many people and create traffic problems. In Litzman’s statement, the health minister said, “throughout the generations the Jewish people knew it must safeguard the Sabbath as a supreme value, and even to sacrifice one’s life for it. The holy Sabbath is the national day of rest, and we were raised to protect against desecrating the Sabbath.”

“Throughout the generations the Jewish people knew it must safeguard the Sabbath as a supreme value, and even to sacrifice one’s life for it. The holy Sabbath is the national day of rest, and we were raised to protect against desecrating the Sabbath.”

Litzman, who became health minister in September 2015 following a ruling by Israel’s apex court prohibiting him from doing the job as a deputy minister, stated he is not leaving the coalition government. On Saturday, the prime minister’s office in a statement said, “the heads of the factions have clarified that they do not intend to leave the coalition” while they were trying to figure out a way “to both respect the Sabbath and ensure safe, consistent public transport”, indicating the coalition government would not be dissolved by Litzman’s resignation.

Netanyahu said he would take Litzman’s vacated place while they try to bring Litzman back. Avi Gabbay, leader of the opposition Labor party, said, “in a modern society, if you want trains to run all week, you have to do maintenance work on Shabbat[…] Litzman is a good minister, and his resignation shows that the Netanyahu government is finished.”

Litzman had discussed about working on Shabbat with religious leader Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter, and was told it was wrong to work on Shabbat. Early in July, when prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to Strasbourg, France to attend former German chancellor Helmut Kohl’s funeral, Netanyahu walked from hotel to European Parliament, and he did not deliver a speech or sign a guestbook to avoid actions of work on the rest day.

This is not the first time the Isaeli government has had work done on Shabbat, but non-Jewish labourers were used to complete the task. According to reports, the task of installing the signalling system on the tracks required skilled workers, for whom substitutes were not available at the time. Israeli Army Radio reported some German engineers were to arrive during the weekend for the signalling system installation work.

Bratz picture filmed at high school in rough area of Los Angeles, while in session

Wednesday, August 1, 2007

Described in press materials as a “low budget” production, the crew of Bratz: The Movie turned to a busy LA high school to film the picture’s main scenes.

Shot in 30 days, during February and March 2007, the film had to work around the roughly 3,500 students at Santee Educational Complex in South Los Angeles, California. Most productions, like High School Musical and Degrassi: The Next Generation, do principal photography shoots during the summer. Since the Bratz film had a summer release, and the Santee school goes year-round, such a pattern was impossible.

Director Sean McNamara “was adamant about using this school”, named in the film as “Carry Nation High”, said production designer Rusty Smith. “We knew it was going to be complicated, and it was, but we pulled it off. I’m sure it was a big distraction for us to be there and it’s really a compliment to the principal and the students’ cooperation because we couldn’t have done it without them.”

One of the stars, Chelsea Staub, agreed. “I was amazed at how orderly and respectful the students at Santee High were during our invasion.” She admits that she “would have had issues walking by our heavenly omelet station every morning,” if she were a Santee student.

Such good behavior could be deemed extra surprising considering the school, which opened in 2005, is located in an area known for its amount of gangs. Some students walk through 50 different gang “territories” on the way to school, 18 of which have documented members enrolled as students. Students have brought AK-47s to class, and jumped police officers for their guns. A two day melee at the school, whose principal is a former cop, resulted in 34 arrests and 10 hospitalizations, mostly for pepper-spray-related injuries. Half of the instructors, as of March 2006, were in their first year of teaching.

The school board superintendent and Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa rode the bus to the first day the bus was routed through the neighbourhood; a photographer for the Los Angeles Times caught a 10th grader tagging a window. The first gun shots rang out the second day the school was open.

Bratz: The Movie is a story based on an internationally successful line of dolls. Three “best friends forever” are forced by the queen bee of the high school to separate into various existing cliques. Growing lonely, they rebel by choosing to be true to themselves.

“Filming at a real high school was interesting because you could see real cliques and compare them to the simulated cliques in the movie,” commented Logan Browning, one of the movie’s stars, herself a senior in high school.

Staub, who plays the antagonist Meredith, also felt the real-life location was beneficial to the movie. “All the sounds and background images helped make it real for me. The shifting echoes of students on the bleachers and school bells that released the chaos of kids changing classes made me feel like I was truly a part of the high school experience as opposed to doing a scene on a soundstage.”

“The presence of that school and the way it’s laid out, almost like a prison, became a major character in the film,” said production designer Rusty Smith. (Interestingly, Meredith’s mantra in the movie is “take no prisoners”.) The school, devoid of color, easily contrasted against the vibrant and unique bedrooms of the Bratz girls. “We knew it was going to be complicated and it was but we pulled it off. I’m sure it was a big distraction for us to be there and it’s really a compliment to the principal and the students’ cooperation because we couldn’t have done it without them.”

A 16-foot high sculpture was added to the school courtyard, to help transform it into Carry Nation. The sculpture was of Nation, the most infamous and formidable member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in pre-prohibition America, wielding her hatchet in one hand and Bible in the other.

The production also filmed in the residential neighborhood of Studio City, and The Grove, a popular shopping centre at the heart of West Hollywood, both areas of Los Angeles.

The film opens in theaters across the United States and Canada on August 3, in the United Kingdom on August 17, in Spain on August 24, and Australia and New Zealand September 20.

Wet On Wet Royal Icing Poinsettia Tutorial

Submitted by: Zackary Pradhan

For the poinsettia cookie above it literally took me 3.5 minutes to outline, cover, and decorate. Once the wet on wet method was finished I allowed the sugar cookie to dry for about 2 hours, piped a snails trail boarded, and allowed the cookie to completely dry. The results are not only beautiful, but simple.

Royal icing Fresh Egg Recipe:

Prepare your mise en place.

In the bowl of a standing mixer, sift icing sugar twice, add lemon juice and egg whites.

Attach the bowl to the standing mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, beat on the lowest speed for ten minutes to reach off-peak consistency. If the royal icing has not soften enough keep beating, on low, in 3 minute increments until off-peak consistency is achieved. Add the almond extract and beat, on low speed, for 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer to a container, lay plastic wrap directly on the icing, and cover with a damp cloth.

Both Sydney and I prefer egg white royal icing, both for taste and texture.

Meringue Powder Royal Icing Recipe:

Prepare your mise en place.

In the bowl of a standing mixer pour warm water whisk (by hand) to a soft peak consistency, sift icing sugar over the mixture, add lemon juice and almond extract. Beat on the lowest speed, with the paddle attachment to reach off-peak consistency. If the royal icing has not soften enough keep beating, on low, in 3 minute increments until off-peak consistency is achieved. Add the almond extract and beat, on low speed, for 30 to 60 seconds.Transfer to a container, lay plastic wrap directly on the icing, and cover with a damp cloth.

Royal Icing Wet on Wet Poinsettia Cookie:

You can find most of the supplies here

To Colour:

For white: Use uncolouredroyal icing.

For light pink: 1/4 toothpick of pink.

For medium pink: 1/4 tooth pink, 1/8 toothpick christmas red.

For Red: 1/4 tooth violet, 1/8 toothpick golden yellow, 2 drops red red, and 2 drops christmas red.

For green: 1/2 toothpick moss green.

For each colour you will need 1/2 cup of the royal icing you just created placed on a non stick board, dip the coloured toothpick into the royal icing and rub the colour into the icing with your spatula against the the non stick board until the the icing is completely coloured (no white is showing).

Be sure to clean your board between colours.

To achieve a 10 second constancy:

Slowly add about 1/4 teaspoon of cooled boiled water to the colorured icing, rub the water into the icing with a clean spatula. Continue adding a 1/4 of water until you are able to draw a line in the icing (with the spatula) and the mark closes in 10 to 12 seconds. If you live in a humid climate use 15 seconds. Place the coloured 10 second constancy icing in piping bags and cover with a damp cloth until use.

I find using a rub down method controls air bubbles.

Place the #2 tips in two separate piping bags, place the red icing in one of the tipped bags and the dark pink in the other.

The white and the light pink use without tips; cut a small portion off the bottom of the piping bag.

Place the PME leaf tip in a piping bag for the green colour.

The boarder uses a # 2 pme tip with off peak constancy royal icing coloured red.

Ex-WorldCom Chief found guilty of all charges

Tuesday, March 15, 2005

A federal jury found Bernard Ebbers guilty of all nine counts in the indictment brought against him. The verdict was handed down by a New York jury after 8 days of deliberation on the former WorldCom CEO and mastermind behind the accounting scandal that brought down the telcom giant.

AP writer Erin McClam reports, “Ebbers’ face reddened.”, as the verdict was read. Sentencing is set for June 13 when he will face up to 85 years in prison.

Ebbers testified in his own defence, saying he left the details of the company’s accounting to others and that he had no knowledge of shady practices. But Scott Sullivan, ex-chief financial officer and key prosecution witness, directly linked Ebbers to the fraud. He had agreed to co-operate with prosecutors in the hopes of receiving a lenient sentence for his own involvement in the fraud.

The demise of WordCom sparked a massive class action law suit by investors. The drastic plunge of WorldCom’s stock value cost upwards to $11 billion as the scandal unravelled. Secuities fraud case filings stemming from the suits will probably break new legal ground whereby the actions of investment banks and public accounting firms will be called into legal question.
