What Is Your Specific Purpose In Public Speaking?

What Is Your Specific Purpose in Public Speaking?

by

The Voice Lady

When it comes to public speaking, it is important to establish your general purpose before you even begin the creation of your material. What is your reason for speaking? Have you been asked to speak at a business convention or give the convocation speech at your alma mater? Maybe you are enrolled in a public speaking course or are a member of Toastmasters. Possibly you belong to a leads organization and it is your turn to give a 10-minute overview of your business. Of course, it is also possible that you are looking to establish yourself in the business of public speaking.

Whatever your reason for speaking, what would you like to accomplish? Do you want to inform your audience or persuade them? Aside from speeches to entertain, which is a topic unto itself, most people are either speaking to convey information, much like a teacher or a lecturer, or their goal is to persuade, in which they are supporting and defending a cause. The latter could be as simple as convincing your audience to buy your book at the back of the room or it could be as complex as trying to convince a group of college students to change their political or religious beliefs. Another way of looking at your topic is to decide if you would like to explain, describe or demonstrate something. If so, then your general purpose is to inform. On the other hand, you may wish to sell, convince, or speak in defense of an idea or an issue. If such is the case, then your goal is to persuade. While the persuasive presentation is more challenging and more complex than the informative, the former will and should be informative in much of the material you discuss; however, the information you provide should only include that which is necessary to make your point. Let’s say, for example, that you want to convince your audience that fluorescent lighting should not replace incandescent lighting. As your goal is to persuade, it is not the time to give the history of the light bulb. Because most people are unaware of the health hazards of fluorescent lighting and believe only that it is cheaper over incandescent lighting, you will have several facts to discuss that will be informative in nature, such as what steps you must take if you break a bulb. It is also important to recognize that not all in your audience are going to agree with you and that you should not be disappointed. You may be able to convince some people that both forms of lighting are valuable, but you will not change the minds of your entire audience.

Explicit Canadian workplace safety ads pulled from TV due to Christmas season

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Controversial and explicit Canadian workplace safety ads have been pulled from television, and paper ads from some bus shelters for the Christmas season. However, the ads will return to air in January.

“It’s totally erroneous to suggest we’re pulling anything,” chairman of the Workplace Safety and Information Board of Ontario, Steve Mahoney said. “Our plan from Day 1 was to stop the ads around the middle of December when most of the advertising that’s in the media is focused on Christmas and purchasing gifts. We just didn’t want to be competing with all that stuff.”

In one of the TV ads a woman accidentally slips on grease on the floor and a large steaming pot falls onto her face, and she starts screaming to death. The ads end with the message “There really are no accidents”.

A paper ads shows a construction worker who is in a pool of blood with a forklift operation manual stuck in his chest. Another with a man who is slit by a “Danger” sign with his leg stuck in a machine. They show the messages: “Lack of training can kill” and the other “Ignoring safety procedures can kill”.

“The critics amount to about 25 per cent rating, and I’m delighted they’re upset about the ads because I wouldn’t want anyone to enjoy watching them.”

The videos have been viewed more than 70,000 times on the Board’s website and are gaining large amounts of views on YouTube.

The transit authorities of Hamilton and Mississauga will show modified advertisements. The transit authority of Guelph will show the ads in bus shelters, but the transit authority of Windsor will not because of the graphic nature.

“We’re not against workplace safety, but this is too graphic,” said Caroline Postma, chair of the Transit Windsor board.

Mississauga city councillour Carolyn Parrish said: “My son-in-law was telling me that they shouldn’t be on in prime time because when [my grandson] watches them he just about bursts into tear. Now he follows his mom around the kitchen to make sure she doesn’t spill grease. And he’s only four. There’s too much of a chance that … people are really badly affected by it, and can’t really do anything about it anyway.” She suggested the ads only be aired to workers with the jobs shown in the commercials.

Mahoney changed the earlier promise to air the ads only after 8:00pm to after 9:00pm at last nights meeting with Mississauga city council.

Mahoney said the commercials and paper ads are not “too graphic at all”. And they are “absolutely appropriate and they’re doing what they’re intended to do, they’re creating what I call a water cooler topic of conversation.”

Ninety-eight Canadian workers so far have been killed on the job this year.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

A Quick Fix For Overcoming Vacant Apartments For Sale

byAlma Abell

For real estate agents and brokers looking to move more luxury apartments, the current market can sometimes be frustrating. Here are some quick tips for selling more real estate – and boosting your business right away!

Get Social

Today’s realtors know that putting social media and property websites to work for them is one of the best ways to move luxury apartments. Properties and new developments like 17 & 52 Convent Avenue offer interactive sites that list more than just apartments for sale. They contain all the information you need to link from your social media and give your clients the tools they need to consider higher-end properties. Get social and interact with your buyers to show them just how dedicated you are to getting them information on the fabulous properties they will love to live in!

Sell the Area

Selling any kind of real estate is about more than just marketing a home. It’s about selling buyers on an entire neighborhood or area. This is especially true when an area has a preconceived reputation, like many parts of major cities. Harlem, NY apartments for sale may conjure up mental images for buyers that are very different than the actual luxury condos for sale, so be sure to do your part in selling the whole area to your clients. Photograph and include information about local attractions, favorite Harlem hotspots for natives of the area, and information on family-friendly and luxury destinations nearby.

Make Shopping Experiential

Speaking of taking photos, nothing sells property like the modern “experiential” technique that realtors are using. This style of selling involves immersive photos – often professional – three-dimensional tours of condos for sale, and interactive maps and chats for those browsing these locations online. Making buying a new home an entire experience for your clients will net you the best results in moving properties from “for sale” to “sold”.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate David Sparrow in Don Valley West

Friday, October 10, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with David Sparrow. Sparrow is a candidate in Ontario’s Don Valley West riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner. The riding was set to vote in a by-election on September 22, 2008, following the resignation of John Godfrey, but Stephen Harper’s sudden election call nulled that effort.

Also running in the Toronto riding are Liberal Rob Oliphant, Conservative John Carmichael, Green Georgina Wilcock, and Communist Catherine Holliday.

The following is an interview with Sparrow, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.

Surprise demolition of partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York met with opposition

Saturday, June 14, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Wikinews has learned that, in a surprising turn of events, the city of Buffalo located in New York, has ordered and begun an emergency demolition on a three story 19th century stable which partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11 causing at least five homes to be evacuated. Residents are not happy, and despite the short notice of the demolition, nearly 30 people showed up to protest it. Demolition was not supposed to begin until Monday June 16.

At about 2:30 p.m. (eastern time) on June 13, demolition crew arrived at the stable located at 428 Jersey Avenue and began to unload heavy equipment which will be used to demolish the building. This came as a surprise to residents, as demolition was not supposed to start until Monday June 16.

During the early afternoon hours on June 11, the Buffalo Fire Department was called to scene after residents called 9-1-1 stating that part of the building had collapsed. Material from the building fell into the yards of at least three neighboring houses. Some of the bricks landed inside the building, while some fell into the yards of some houses behind homes on Richmond Avenue, leaving a ‘V’ shape.

At about 3:30 p.m. crews began to demolish a small portion of the stable located behind Joe Murray’s home, a resident who lives behind a portion of the building on Jersey and Richmond avenues. While demolition was taking place, the section collapsed into Murray’s backyard, prompting a call to police. Some residents who own home surrounding the building were inside Murray’s house holding a neighborhood meeting when demolition began. No one was injured when the section collapsed.

“[The building] can come down any minute,” stated Donna Berry of the Buffalo Police Department who also added that when police arrived on scene, they immediately put a stop to demolition, fearing the safety of surrounding residents and pedestrians.

“So many [of the] people [living around the building] are at risk, it makes me want to cry,” added Berry.

Police, local politicians and area residents are concerned that demolition crews and the city are not taking the proper precautions to ensure the safety of residents during demolition.

“[There is] no protection for neighbors. [This is] appalling and beyond negligence,” stated Tim Tielman, Executive Director of the Campaign for Buffalo who was referring to the negligence of the demolition crew.

“[In order to stop demolition] citizens must demonstrate direct harm to themselves,” added Tielman.

The city’s preservation board held an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue. Wikinews has learned that the owner of the building, Bob Freudenheim, gave the city permission to demolish the building because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim was part-owner of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and was also an advocate to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel from being built on the corners of Forest and Elmwood Avenues in 2006 and 2007, which Wikinews extensively covered. He also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built.

Tielman states that he was in contact with Freudenheim this morning. Tielman states that Freudenheim “is not spending a dime” to have the building renovated. Tielman states that Freudenheim has offered to sell the building to any interested party for only one US dollar, but that he “flip flops [his decision] constantly,” sometimes wanting hundreds of thousands of dollars for the building. Wikinews has attempted to contact Freudenheim, but so far has been unsuccessful.

City building inspectors were also on scene evaluating the building and ensuring the safety of residents. Donald Grezebielucina states that “some people are on notice to vacate their properties”, but also stated that no other precautions were being taken other than placing “tires and scaffolding” onto the side of 430 Jersey, which sits less than eight feet from the buildings East side.

“The gas has been shut off in case we lost the building, so there would be no explosions or anything like that. It’s so unstable, the structural integrity is gone. The chemical composite of the trusses has changed dramatically and dry rotted. There are three vehicles in the basement which totally disappeared,” stated Grezebielucina to the press while protesters yelled “save our building, save our neighborhood.”

Wikinews has also learned that local residents have consulted a lawyer regarding the issue, and hope to petition the New York State Supreme court to issue an injunction to stop demolition. They states that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions, and many are afraid that once the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished. Freudenheim is facing housing violations for neglecting the building. Though residents are fighting, Tielman states that “an injunction is unlikely.”

“We had a letter of violation against him. He was supposed to have started work to stabilize the brick this Monday. We all hope this building could be saved. But we’ve got five houses evacuated and we cannot tolerate any further delay. We’ve got to get people back into their homes in a safe condition,” said Richard Tobe, Commissioner of the city’s Permit and Inspection Services.

Demolition is set to resume at 8:00 a.m.in the morning of Saturday June 14.

Mike Lombardo, the Commissioner for the Buffalo Fire Department, believes that the building was built in 1812 or 1814, making it nearly 200 years old. It is one of only three stables still standing in the city.

Wikinews interviews Spanish shooter Paulo Fontán

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

This week, Wikinews interviewed Spanish Paralympic sport shooter Paulo Fontán Torreiro. Late last month, Galician Fontán competed at the Alicante hosted 2013 IPC European Shooting Championship, where he finished twenty-third in the R4 10-meter air rifle standing event, and fortieth in the R5 10-meter air rifle prone event.

((Wikinews)) : So you competed at the IPC European Shooting Championships last month? How did you do? Are you happy with the result?

Paulo Fontán Torreiro: Yes, I competed in the European Championship in Alicante. It was my first important event and I felt very nervous, I wanted to perform well. Despite improving my previous scores and achieving the minimum qualifying score for next year’s World Championship, I think I could have done better.

((WN)) : What do you think you need to improve to possibly compete at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and get a medal?

Paulo Fontán: Basically I would need to be able to train more constantly, obtain financial resources to participate in international events, and have a bit of luck on the day of the competition.

((WN)) : What are the biggest challenges you face on the road to the Rio Games? Money? Good competition? The support network to travel and compete at the highest level? Disability access at training venues?

Paulo Fontán: All that are included in the questions. In order to train effectively, you need adequate facilities, and that’s not the norm here. And to increase my level, I would need to compete against good rivals, basically at international events. For that, I require money and support, something that’s not too available.

((WN)) : Why did you chose to compete in shooting? Why not compete in another sport?

Paulo Fontán: I first tried other sports but finally focused on shooting because it fits my capabilities better, I’m not bad at it, and there is a very agreeable atmosphere at the competitions.

((WN)) : Who are your role models in shooting? Are there any shooters you particularly admire?

Paulo Fontán: I must thank the support Juan Saavedra has given me since I started, and which he keeps giving me when I need it. I would like to mention Marciano Vázquez, the Spanish national team coach, too for his advice and trust in me when he called me up for the European Championship: I hope to return his trust with some future triumph.

((WN)) : What is the sport shooting culture like in Spain? Are people generally supportive when you tell them what sport you compete in?

Paulo Fontán: I don’t think it’s very well known, and there could be some rejection because of the “pegar tiros” part, but that’s out of ignorance since it is mainly a mental sport, a sport requiring focus.

((WN)) : Do you think the classification system in shooting is fair? Do you think it should be changed?

Paulo Fontán: I’ve only been doing this for three years and haven’t had time to analyze it deeply so as to have an opinion about it.

((WN)) : Would you recommend the sport to other people with disabilities? What are reasons they should or should not take up the sport?

Paulo Fontán: Yes, I would recommend it, and I would because it is a sport which can be practiced by a wide array of different disabilities, and for a long time. The biggest problem is the high initial investment, the lack of adequate facilities or the cost of travelling to competitions since there are not many places that allow people with disabilities to participate.

Wisconsin, Simple Math, Siimpleton Politcians}

Wisconsin, Simple Math, Siimpleton Politcians

by

Bruno Korschek

As most of you probably know by now, there have been some rather large demonstrations going on in Madison, Wisconsin by public employee union members who are upset that the new Republican governor and legislature are about to pass a bill that would eliminate collective bargaining for certain public employee unions and require union members to contribute to their pension and medical benefit costs. The reason for this legislative action is that the state is faced with a looming budget deficit of $3.6 billion and the Republican lawmakers believe that this is one of the few ways left to help close that deficit.

The naive remarks of a lawmaker, who was supporting the protesters on the news by saying that that wealthy in Wisconsin should be taxed more and that the unions should not be required to do any givebacks to save the financial solvency of the state, showed how out of touch with reality our politicians are. If you do a little math you see the either math is simple in this case or the politician is simple:- The following math is based on official IRS results detailing how many Americans earn how much money. Thus, these are official Federal government numbers, they are not Fox News numbers, Tea Party numbers, Republican numbers. These are 2008 final, official IRS numbers, the last year which this data was available to this detail – The results of the 2010 Census which showed that Wisconsin was home to 1.82% of the nation’s population. – For 2008 IRS filings, 321,294 households nationwide earned over as million dollars. If you assume that the number of millionaires are spread throughout the country in the same proportion as the population, then we would expect Wisconsin to have about 5,847 millionaire earners in the state, 1.82% of 321,294. – If this lawmaker wanted the “rich’ to pick up the state budget shortfall, then each of those 5,847 state residents would have to pay a whopping $615,700 to eliminate the shortfall ($3.6 billion divided by 5,847 people). – You could venture a legitimate guess that there are even fewer millionaire earners in Wisconsin than the 5,847 estimate above, making the budget reduction burden for Wisconsin millionaire earners even greater. Other, richer states (New York, California, Texas, New Jersey) probably have more millionaire earners relative to their population than Wisconsin. – If you ever did such an insane move you can be sure that shortly afterward there would be no millionaires living in Wisconsin. – Since we know that the average American household spends almost 30% of its annual income on income taxes, sales taxes, Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, excise taxes, etc., and Wisconsin is already one of the most heavily taxed states, many of these Wisconsin millionaires would not be able to pay their $615,700 share since after taking more than 30% of their earnings via other taxes and paying for food and other basic necessities, they would not have enough left over to cover their $615,700. Simple math, simpleton politicians. The government debt burden has gotten so high in this country that even if you confiscate all of the earnings from the richer Wisconsin families, you still might not be able to cover the budget shortfall. Does not the political class understand this simple math fact of reality? You can no longer tax the rich to pay off the bad financial management of the simpleton politicians.Consider another example. Fortune magazine annually publishes its list of the richest Americans along with an estimate of their worth. If you added up the richest 400 Americans from their last analysis, you found that their total net worth was about $2.7 TRILLION. Thus, if you confiscated all that these richest Americans owned, (bonds, cash, boats, houses, cars, furs, property), you would not come close to paying down just the deficit that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi rang up over the past four years. You cannot tax the rich enough, even if you take all that they own, to cover the shortfall. Simple math, simpleton politicians.Want more examples? Last year, New Jersey was looking at a state government expense stream of about $30 billion and a revenue stream of about $20 billion, leaving a budget shortfall of about $10 billion. What were half of the New Jersey political class worried about? Was it the $10 billion? No, it was the fact that the governor refused to raise the income tax on the highest earners in the state by 2%. By the outcries from the state employee unions and the state Democrats, you would have thought that this single action was responsible for the $10 billion shortfall. However, if you did the math, you would have found that raising the income tax 2% for that small percentage of earners would have raised far less than $1 billion, still leaving the state more than NINE billion dollars short. Rather than attack the underlying root causes of the problem, the politicians were intent on arguing and politicking over a nit that would not have made any significant difference in the overall crisis. Simple math, simpleton politicians. That is what is so disconcerting about the Federal government’s skyrocketing national debt. It seems most of the political class do not understand simple, logical math and the simple reality that goes along with it. And even the small percentage of politicians that might get the simple math, they are too busy continually running for office to make a stand for sanity. Let’s review the looming financial crisis at the Federal level once again for the simpletons in D.C., I will try to speak s…l…o…w…l…y:1) We are about to hit a national debt level of $14 TRILLION. 2) With about 115 million households in the country, that comes out to a debt burden of about $122,000 per household. 3) In the best of all economic worlds, if Obama has his way, his budgets will add another $7 TRILLION to the national debt in the next ten years, making the household burden in excess of $182,000. This debt will eventually have to be paid off by us and FUTURE generations of Americans, our kids and our grandkids. 4) Very soon, within the next few years, American taxpayers will pay more on interest on the Federal debt than they do on all other discretionary areas of the Federal budget combined, meaning less money for transportation, education, etc. 5) By paying so much to cover the national debt, Americans will be less free to spend their earnings on things they want such as charities, better schooling for their kids, their own businesses, and their own lives, resulting in a sustained and deep loss of freedom. 6) Speaking of freedom, the Chinese now own almost $1 TRILLION worth of our debt, restricting our freedom in the international arena, i.e. do not tick off one of your largest bond holders regardless of what compromises you have to make on human rights. Smart Americans from across the political spectrum recognize and understand the problem and most have come up with ways to eliminate the problem, with the one exception being the American political class. These partisan and bipartisan Americans include, but are not limited to, the Cato Institute, Obama’s own debt reduction comimission, the Concord Coalition, the National Taxpayers Union and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. Simple math, simpleton politicians. Simply a travesty.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.
